CHAPTER 54 Switch Identities

  Emma's Pov

The territory of the Direwolf Pack is as welcoming as the Night Howlers Pack's territory, which surprises me. I've never been able to get anywhere near the Direwolf Pack until today. The rivalry between our two packs has always been a major point for that. I never quite understood why, if someone is meant for someone, how can you stop that? Helena was Alfa Peter Garcia's destined mate, how could she deny such a powerful bond even though she was engaged to someone else? "Who do you choose?" Accalia purrs inside me, asking me a question that catches me off guard.

"Choose who, Accalia?" I mentally question my wolf.

"Michael. Matthew. Daniel." The names come out with some difficulty from Accalia, and I find myself amused by her question.

"There's no one to choose. I'm no longer destined for Michael and Matthew and Daniel, they're handsome and stir sinful desires in me, but that's all," I reply, but even I don't fully believe my words, much less Accalia.

"We're here. It's here, apparently," Matthew declares as he parks the car. We're on a commercial street, tall glass buildings on both sides of the busy street, shopping stores, and some restaurants.

The sorcerer's office is a rather cozy building from the outside, with three floors, the facade's colors are a bluish tone like the ocean, and there's a flower bed, even though it's not something common in the other nearby buildings. There's a glass sign above the wooden door that reads Vini Lockytree sorcerer of mind and body.

"I hope he has what we're looking for," I comment to Matthew hopefully before getting out of the car.

Upon opening the wooden door of the building, a bell rings above, announcing our presence. The inside is very spacious and open, there's a reception desk very clean and organized, and a young woman with colorful curly hair is sitting typing on the computer. She looks at us with a very friendly smile on her face and points us to where to sit, saying we'll be next to be seen shortly. We follow her suggestion as I take a better look at the waiting room, there are fabulously painted pictures on the walls, as well as several potted plants scattered on the floor.

The reception didn't take long, we informed the receptionist what we were looking for with Vini Lockytree, and she informed us that he's attending to another client, but we'll be next shortly. It doesn't take more than ten minutes for that to come true, behind the reception I start hearing the voice of two men talking, and when I recognize one's voice, my heart skips a beat.

Descending the stairs is Daniel Garcia, his golden blonde hair is loose and a bit tousled, but that only makes him look even more like a Greek god! As soon as he finishes the last step, our eyes meet, and a huge smile appears on his lips.

"Princess!" he declares so excitedly that I blush. His steps towards me are quick, and he pulls me into a hug that surprises me, but I don't refuse.

Someone clears their throat very loudly behind me, while I'm hugging back the very muscular and fragrant body of Daniel. I quickly disentangle myself before I start drooling over Daniel. When I look back, Matthew is scowling and with his arms crossed, staring at me and Daniel.

"Sorry, Daniel, I'm in a hurry today," I inform him a bit more subdued, and take a few steps closer to Matthew.

"Did you come to see my best friend, Vini? He's an awesome sorcerer! He'll surely have whatever you need." Daniel confirms excitedly and points behind him.

My eyes go to the spot indicated by Daniel, and I finally meet the sorcerer Vini.

"Black, blue, and red cat," I blurt out catatonically, and the sorcerer raises an eyebrow in my direction.

Vini walks over to us and extends his hand for a handshake. "Hello, how can I help you today?" he asks politely.

Matthew and I don't spend much time in Vini's office; we report what's needed, Emily's symptoms, and the possibility of her being someone else. Vini hands us the potion and the instructions.

"If it's indeed a chronic illness, it won't be cured; it'll only reduce the frequency of the blackouts. However, if it's some other mental enchantment, it'll help her recover her memories," Vini explains attentively.

As we're about to leave, I remember what Charlotte had also said about the black, blue, and red cat, and I hurry back to Vini's consultation room.

"Hey, sorry... I know this is very odd. But would you mind attending a birthday party in a few days?" I ask and notice Matthew beside me widening his eyes for a few seconds.

Vini raises his eyebrows surprised by the question, "No, I wouldn't mind. I love parties!" he replies, making me break into a huge smile.

After we leave the consulting room, the rest of the day flies by for me. My anxiety consumes all my energy until Emily arrives at the pack the next day right after breakfast.

We talked a little about what happened on our first visit and how I went to find a remedy to help her with the blackouts.

"Are you serious? You did that for me?" Emily asks impressed.

I give her a friendly smile as I hand over the magic potion, "It was nothing. I just wanted to be a good host to you. You can take it now, no problem at all."

And so Emily does. She drinks the entire bottle, and nothing happens immediately. I almost feel disappointed by the initial reaction because maybe it was just a chronic illness after all.

"Emma?" Emily calls me with a more confused voice, and her eyes are teary, about to cry.

My heart races at that, and I dare to ask, "Ava, is it you?" and the young woman in front of me slowly nods.

That makes my heart skip several rhythmic beats, and I quickly pull her into a tight hug, "Ava! You're alive, thank the goddess!"

"Emma, what happened? I... I can't fully remember." Ava responds with a slight stutter, shocked by the unfolding reality.

I guide Ava to a couch, and she sits down; I recount the past few months for her. The murder, my accusation, I simply tell her everything.

"I can't remember any of this, Emma. I don't recall picking you up drunk from any club," Ava says, bewildered and confused.

"What do you remember, Ava? What's your last memory?" I ask concerned, and my best friend takes a few minutes to respond to me, as if she's sifting through memories and rearranging them again.

"The day before all these events you mentioned, I remember going out with my friend... Emily, from college. We went hiking near the Lone Mountain Pack, and that's all I remember."

That fills me with complete horror. Who was with me on the day of the murder? Where was Emily, the real Emily now? My eyes are focused on Ava and how horrified she also feels about all this.

"You spent all these months thinking you were Emily, then?" I ask worriedly, and Ava confirms.

In my mind comes what Charlotte had commented on about playing being someone else. Was that it? Did Ava and Emily switch identities? But why?
