CHAPTER THIRTY-FIVE

"What game are you playing at?" Achilles asked the moment he heard his brother walk into the living room. He was sitting on a stool at the bar table and drinking a glass of bourbon.

He has summoned Alex so that they could talk about what he did that morning.

"What game are you talking about?" Alex asked as he approached him on the table.

Achilles quietly poured another a glass of bourbon and handed over to his brother who took the beat next to his. Alex gladly took the drink from his hand and had a big sip.

"Are we both going to keep pretending like everything is fine between us?"

"Nothing has ever been fine between us from the way we learnt to say our a, b, c's and we have never never tried to hide that fact, so I don't know what you are talking about"

"Alex don't pretend like you don't know what I'm talking about because I know you do." Achilles insisted. Alex took a big sip of his whiskey before placing his glass on the table.

"Fine, let me pretend I know. So tell me, what do you want to do about it?"

"I don't intend to do anything, I just need you to stop whatever it is you think you are doing. It's never going to work." They kept talking in parables.

"And what makes you think it won't?" He asked and Achilles angrily slammed his palms against the table and sneered at Alex who was very unbothered by his current action.

"If you are trying to scare me, just know you failed."

"I'm not trying to scare you, I just want you to get my point. Stay away from Bella, stop trying to get close to her, stop trying to make her fall for you! Stop it!" Achilles warned and Alex shook his head as he looked at him.

"You don't want her, but you don't want someone else to have her. That's selfishness and greed and you know those are things I cannot tolerate"

"Alex I have a good reason for not wanting to be with Bella"

"Because she's poor? Because she's not up to your social standards?"

"That is not the justification god-damnit! That is not the justification at all! Sweet moon goddess is that how limited your understanding is on the matter? I can't even believe you just said that" Achilles cried and Alex scoffed.

"Don't try to deny it, Achilles. You told her you could not marry her because of her social standards. You did, don't lie to me" He stood on his point and Achilles calmly shook his head. His brother had deliberately refused to understand him.

"I have a reason why I don't want to marry Bella and that reason has got nothing to do with her social standards, I swear!"

"I want to hear the reason"

"I can't tell you" he denied and Alex emptied the content of his glass and stepped down from the stool.

"If you can't tell me, then I'm afraid I cannot stop getting close to Bella. If you want her, then get her now, because if you don't, I will and once I do, I will take her away from here once all of this is over. That I swear" He asserted and left the living room.

Achilles balled his fists and gritted his teeth in resentment.

Alex was not even trying to reason things with him at all. He was just a few minutes away from losing his mind.

"Achilles" a soft voice called and when he turned to look, he saw Diana walking towards him. He quickly looked away from her and plastered his gaze on the wine bar.

Diana who had justt overhead all what he had said to Alex pretended not to know anything and sat on the stool Alex just vacated.

"If you are here to take tell me the same thing Alex just told me, then leave" He warned but Diana did not move and inch.

She took the bottle of bourbon before him and gently served herself some of it in the glass Alex just used.

  "You know, I'm just curious"

"What are you curious about?" Achilles asked not looking at her.

No matter how angry he was, he would always listen to anything Diana had to say to him. He just could not bring himself to ignore her or send her away from his presence.

"When we were kids, growing up, you and Alex always fought over toys, food, clothes, shoes. Over very petty things and I used to believe that once you both grew up, you will drop fighting. But then, you became teenagers and the fights still did not stop. Alex left the pack for his adventures and hardly ever came home, but the few times he did, you guys did nothing but fight. Even now that you two are full grown mature men, you are still fighting. Have you ever thought of how it makes me feel? Watching my two brothers fight almost everyday over very petty issues, have you ever wondered how that makes me feel?" She asked and Achilles could feel the sadness in her face. He turned to look at her the tears shimmering her eyes shattered his heart into a million pieces.

He opened his mouth to talk, but words failed him.

  His mind was blank.

"There's this silent feud going on between you and Alex and I want to know about it. Don't even try to cut me off on this, tell me" she commanded and Achilles nodded his head as he drank more win from his glass.

"It's about Bella" He spoke out.

  "What about Bella"

"A few weeks ago, Alex approached me, he asked me to marry Bella because I got her pregnant and I said I won't, so he got mad. He got mad and I don't know why, but he told me if I do not marry Bella, then he will and today, just now, he repeated the same statement and he said he is going to take her away once everything is over" He explained between his teeth and Diana could sense the bitterness in his words.

She wanted to laugh, but she did not because she was scared of how Achilles would react. Just the other day, she had begged Alex to make Achilles jealous, but she had no idea Alex was already on the matter.

"So, you are mad at Alex because he told you he would marry Bella if you do not marry her"

"Yes and also because he trying to make her fall in love with him. It's annoying!" He lamented and Diana pursed her lips together to stop the laugh that was about to escape.

"But… Achilles, you said you don't like Bella and you don't want to marry her, why then are you angry when Alex says he would?" She asked and Achilles gave a sharp gaze.

"Seriously? Seriously Diana, you are going to pick his side on this?"

"I'm not picking any body's side. I'm trying to look at things from both perspectives. You said you will not marry the girl, and now you are upset when someone else wants her, you won't keep her, you won't let her go. Is that being selfish?" Diana asked and Achilles looked her scornfully, but she did not flinch.

This was all part of her plan.

She was saying all those things so that he would confess his feelings for Bella and marry her.

"That is just the limit of your understanding on the matter. I have my reasons for not wanting to marry Bella."

"Because you don't love her? because she will not make a good Luna. Isn't that it?" She asked looking straight into his eyes, expecting him to say no so she would get the truth out of him, but Achilles just stayed quiet and did not say anything further as if he had read her mind.

He took a big sip of his whiskey and kept staring at his refection in the mirror before him.

"Answer me Achilles. You don't want to marry her because you don't love her, isn't that the truth?" She asked again, this time in a more serious tone, but Achilles still did not utter a word to her.

The two siblings stayed on the bar for a long while, pouring each other drinks and drinking like their lives depended on it.

When Achilles was calm again, he turned to look at his sister.

"Assign five more servants for Bella"

"What?" Diana interrogated with a loud chuckle. "She already has seven personal maids" She reported.

"Only seven? Alright then, make it thirteen so they round up to twenty. I want maids at her service anytime of the day and I want to hear no excuses!"

"Achilles, that's too much. I think you are overreacting "

"I an not overreacting! I am not blowing things out of proportion as you think. I just don't want Alex doing things for her. She has maids to serve her breakfast in bed and even if they are unavailable, I am the one who's supposed to do things for her because she is carrying my child, not his! MY CHILD!" He screamed in anger and his eyes turned yellow.

His entire body was as hot as hell fire and all the hair on his body stood erect. He could no longer contain the wrath boiling in his heart so he decided to let it out on Diana.

"Alex is not trying to take her away, he's just being nice like everyone…"

"HIS KINDNESS BE DAMNED!" He cut her off as he threw the glass of wine he was holding to the floor and the poor glass shattered into pieces.

Servants rushed in to clean up the mess but Diana signalled them to leave before turning to look at him.

"And your unnecessary anger be damned too! Stop all this madness!" Diana shouted at him with her eyes turning yellow as well "All this fester about not wanting to marry her and the moment someone tells you he wants her, you go crazy. It's okay to care, it's okay want somebody, it's okay to love a girl Achilles. It is okay. You have fallen for Bella admit it. You are not going to die!" Diaba spoke out at the top of her voice but Achilles kept shaking his head.

"You don't understand. You don't. You don't understand at all!" He jumped down from the stool and angrily pushed it aside, causing Diana to flinch in fear.

She quietly stepped down from her stool and stood before her brother, despite the fact that he was in an enraged state. She knew he would never harm her even if he wanted to.

"Then make me understand. Achilles!" She called as she held his face in her palms and forced him to look into his eyes. "I am your sister and I have been with you for the better part of your life. You know there's no one in this entire world that understands you like I do. So I beg of you dear brother, tell me what it is that is stopping you from being with the woman you love" She pleaded firmly and without warning, Achilles burst into tears.

He crashed into her arms and she hugged his big self into her tiny arms.

Achilles knew she was right. Diana was the only person who truly understood him and he knew she would understand him if he just told her the reason why he did not want to marry Bella, but he didn't want to bother her.

"Please brother, tell me" she pleaded in her calm voic. Achilles immediately broke the hug and shook his head.

"It doesn't make any sense, so I don't want to bother you with it. Excuse me" Then he walked out of the living room.

Diana stood there confused, angry and disturbed because that was the first time Achilles was refusing to share his problem with her.

Now that she had confirmed that he loved Bella, what she needed to do find out was why he did not want to marry her.
