"Carter!" Achilles called through mindlink as he stopped on his tracks. He wanted to jointly reprimand his subjects the Gamma, Carter, but he later changed his mind.
Carter was a high rank official in the pack. He was to be treated differently from the other subjects, even when it came to giving punishment.
Also,Achilles wanted to know the reason why he chose to betray him. Carter's father was the former Gamma of the pack. He died on the day of the massacre, just like the Alpha and even the former Beta, who was Tony's father.
The three boys began ruling together as Alpha, Beta and Gamma when they were quite young. Tony and Achilles were close to each other, but Carter chose to distance himself. They never saw it as an issue, because they thought it was his own way.
Carter never spoke much and Achilles never forced him to talk if he didn't want to. Many people knew him to be snobbish and proud, but Achilles never habored any bad thoughts about him, especially as he did his work diligently, or so he had thought.
It really shook Achilles to hear that Carter was the mastermind of the attack and he knew he would not be at peace with himself if he did not find out why Carter chose to betray his pack.
"Alpha Achilles." Carter replied through mindlink.
"Meet me in my office, immediately!" He ordered.
"Yes, Alpha."
Achilles immediately blocked the mindlink and headed for his office.
When he got there, he did not take a seat because he was too restless to seat in one spot. He kept pacing up and down as he thought of what he would do to Carter the moment he showed up.
Because of Carter, Bella had the most difficult birth anyone would never wish to have.
Because of Carter, the pack was evaded and soldiers were killed.
Because of Carter, Alex was dead.
He was so angry that he couldn't even breath properly. A knock on the door made him stop pacing about and he turned around to face the door, with both hands shoved in his pockets.
"Come in." He answered and immediately, the doorknob creaked and the door opened up, revealing Carter's face. Achilles heaved out a heavy sigh as he tried his best to stay still.
He wanted to march forward and give him a dirty smack on both cheeks or better still snap his head so he would die, but he managed to control himself.
Carter, who already knew why he had been summoned, closed the door behind him and walked further into the office. His countenance blank.
Both hands shoved into his trouser pockets and staring deep into Achilles eyes like he was trying to dig out his deepest secrets.
"Alpha Achilles." He called with his usual calm tone as he stood a few meters away from the raging Alpha.
Achilles heaved out a heavy sigh that released most of the anger boiling in him and maintained a blank countenance as well. He could tell judging from Carter's blank countenance that he(Carter) was not sorry for what he did and that he was ready for whatever punishment he had to give him. He didn't look the least bothered.
"Why?" Achilles asked as calmly as he could. Carter chuckled lightly and took a step forward.
"You grew up having it all."
"You know that's not true Carter." Achilles denied his allegation and Carter smiled.
"Yeah, that line won't work. I should try something else ." He said looking around as if wondering what to say. "ahah!" He exclaimed as he turned to look at Achilles once more with a smile plastered on his face. "Everyone treated you like some God!"
"Technically, I am god of this pack. You don't expect them to treat me otherwise."
"Ahhh…" he said nodding. "I just didn't like you, that's all. Yes, it's true that you are a good Alpha. You do your best to protect your subjects and your family. You treat us all equally… but I just don't like you. Your expensive clothes, your dominant aura, the way everyone stops and bows whenever you walk by or walk in somewhere. I just didn't like anything about you or that royal household, so I chose to betray you, caring less about the consequences." He explained with a smile and Achilles smiled as well, despite the fact that he was deeply hurt and wanted to cry.
He loved Carter like a brother and treated him like one.
Before he chose to keep his distance, he had done all he could to be close to him. He had invited him to dinner countless times at the castle, organized walks and games for just the three of them, Alpha Beta and Gamma, but Tony had advised him to stop because he had seen that Carter did not want to be their friend. Achilles heeded to Tony's advice and stopped trying to get close to Carter, thinking it was just his own style, but he had no idea it was because Carter hated him.
He was heartbroken, but the last thing he wanted to do was show Carter that he was broken because of what he had done.
"You know, when Diana told me what you did, I was so angry that I just wanted to punish you along with the others, but on a second thought, I knew it'd be wise for me to ask you why you decided to do what you did. I'm glad I called you here and I'm even more grateful that you are being honest with me. Carter, no matter how much you hated me, you really didn't have to drag my subjects into this. You are a strong man and I'm sure you can survive any punishment, but they can't."
"I didn't even try to persuade them, they volunteered to do so!"
"Ahh…I see .." exclaimed Achilles, nodding his head. "Well, I called a meeting at the meeting hall, the subjects should be waiting for me now, let's walk there together."
"Sure." He agreed as he led the way out of the office without any fear.
Achilles quietly followed with a smile.
If there was one thing he has understood from that conversation, it was the fact that Carter was not the least worried about the consequences of his actions. He wasn't scared of death or banishment, so Achilles had a big surprise for all of them who chose to betray him.
************************************************
The entire hall went dead silent as both Carter and Achilles walked in. Achilles looked down at the subjects he loved with all his heart. The subjects he had spent the last fifteen years ruling and protecting with his life.
The subjects who chose to betray him.
"Before the boundary spell was broken…" He began talking without greeting and everyone was shocked. "Your princess, Diana, spent sleepless nights trying to figure out spells to have it strengthened every morning to keep you all protected. My late brother Alex and your Beta, Tony were on patrol every night to make sure rogues did not invade this pack and cause trouble for any of you. An innocent girl's life was changed drastically for your redemption. I gave it my all to rule and protect you all the best I could because I am your Alpha, but what did I get in return?" He asked looking at the guilty lot. "Betrayal!" He said looking down at the people who had their heads bowed down. "All the curses have been broken, the Wall street pack has been redeemed. Anytime from now, you all will be able to detect your mates. Everything will be back to normal, just like it had been promised. However, my brother Alex will not be able to enjoy this previlege as well because his body is in a casket, covered with spells that will prevent it from decaying. He's dead because you all chose to betray him!" He dished out in a firm tone and no one dared to speak a word or look at him. " I can stand here and rant for the entire day, by that won't change anything. You all know you deserve to be punished for treason, but I won't do that. You made your choice and right now, I'm about to make mine. I seize to be the Alpha of the Wall street pack. You all are free to chose whoever it is you want to be your Alpha, because I'm going to leave this pack and once I do, it's going to be for good!" Then he walked out of the hall with Diana and Tony following him.
He knew they were going to try to stop him, but his mind had already been made.
The people of the Wall street pack betrayed him, there was no way he was going to keep being their Alpha, especially as he just found out that most of them did not like him.
They had made their bed, so they were going to lie on it.
