Chapter 6: I will not be a slave to love Again

"Don't worry, Mum. Your health is what matters most to me. Don't worry. I will do my best to help raise the money for your treatment," Ana said and continued to hug Mrs Morrison as they both shared tears.

Ana and her mother spent time together before Haga took Ana back to Aiden's apartment. Upon arrival, Ana was sent back to her room, and Haga stayed with her.

"Is there anything you would like to eat?" Haga asked.

"I am okay with whatever you will give me," Ana replied, feeling downcast.

The nurse was worried. She had thought that if Ana sees her mother, emotionally, she will be okay, but now she looks worse than before. Haga exited the room and returned with a bowl of potato soup with fish. Ana frowned the moment Haga opened the covered food, and the flavour went into Ana's nostrils.

"What, you don't want?" Haga asked, seeing the look on Ana's face.

Ana shook her head in a no, and Haga sighed.

"Look, Mr Scott will not be happy if he hears you are starving yourself. It is past noon and you have neither had breakfast nor lunch. It is not healthy," Haga said.

Hearing Mr Scott's name, and the fact that they needed the money for her mother's treatment. Ana accepted the bowl of soup from Haga and slowly fed herself. Ana was only halfway through when she started feeling nauseous. She quickly got down from the bed, dropping the bowl of soup to the ground in the process. She headed for the bathroom and threw up into the pot.

"Stay there, don't come out until I say so," Haga said and got the housekeeper, Angela, to have someone clean Ana's room of the vomit.

Haga allowed Ana to return to the room once the servant had left.

"How do you feel?" Haga asked with concern.

"Sick," Ana said and lay down on the bed.

Haga checked Ana's vitals, and it appeared she was running a temperature. She wondered what Ana and her mother had talked about that had worsened Ana's mood so much that she was running a temperature.

"Dr Jerome, Ana is running a temperature and it is not a normal ill health kind," Haga reported.

"Okay, I am coming over," Dr Jerome said and ended the call.

In Canada, it was past noon, and Aiden had just exited the airport after a 4-hour, 54-minute flight from California. He requested a ride to Toronto and easily found where Monica was having her photoshoot. With his current status, mobilising people to find the location of his wife was very simple. Aiden just walked into the set, and Monica sighed upon seeing him.

"Please, I need a moment," Monica said to the director and went inside the room before Aiden could get to her.

"And you are?" one of the crew members asked, seeing a strange man marching towards the model's changing room.

"Read your newspaper," Aiden said and slapped the man's chest with a newspaper he had picked from a newspaper stand upon arrival.

Ignoring the man, Aiden continues walking towards the model changing room, where he had seen Monica enter.

"Excuse me, sir. This is a set you can't..." the director began and trailed off, recognising Aiden from the morning newspaper.

"How may I be of help, Mr Scott?" the director asked, swallowing hard.

"Take me to Monica," Aiden said, and the director led Aiden to Monica's room and asked the makeup artist to excuse Aiden and Monica.

"How did you find me?" Monica asked once she was alone with Aiden.

"I take it you have not read the newspaper this morning. In my current position, finding you is not so hard," Aiden replied.

"Now tell me what happened exactly," Aiden asked, and Monica went silent, recalling Mrs Scott's threat.

"Now you will be a good girl and take these two million dollars and sign the divorce papers. If you don't, your crippled brother will be of blessed memory and I will not just tell Aiden about your dirty secret but I will make you the headline," Mrs Scott threatened.

"Monica, I asked you a question," Aiden said, and Monica turned her back to him.

"You shouldn't have come. Everything I told you on the phone is true. I was after your money," Monica said.

"Monica, do you love me?" Aiden asked, ready to forgive her.

"No," Monica replied.

"Monica, look me in the eye and tell me you don't love me," Aiden demanded, and Monica slowly turned and lifted her head to look at Aiden.

"Don't make this hard for me, Aiden. I love you, but I fell in love with another. I weighed the options, and I chose him over you. I have more reason to be with him than you," Monica said, holding back her tears.

"Why?" Aiden asked.

"I can't be the woman you want. This is my life, Aiden. Here, and all this. You can't have children with me even if you choose surrogacy. Aiden, I know you will go to the ends of the world for me, but let's face reality, we can't always have what we want. I am sorry, I can't be with you," Monica said.

"What is his name?" Aiden asked and swallowed hard.

"I am not telling you. There is no need," Monica said and sat behind the dressing table.

Aiden walked up to her, pulled her into his arms and kissed her. Monica struggled in his arms and freed herself. She landed a slap across Aiden's face and regretted it immediately, but still kept a straight face.

"It is over, Aiden. You can't do that with me. Please leave," Monica said and turned her back to Aiden.

Aiden looked at her. He kissed her, hoping Monica would give in to what they both felt for each other, but Monica's reaction showed she was not lying about having someone else.

"I will sign the divorce papers. It would be the last time I would do anything for you. I will not be a slave to love again," Aiden said and exited the room.

As soon as he left, Monica broke down crying. No man had ever loved her the way Aiden loved her, but her only brother's life was on the line, and she could only sacrifice her love to save his life.

"I will also not be a slave to love again," Monica whispered as she wiped her tears away, getting ready for her next shoot.

"It is over. My beautiful love story is over," she thought, touching her lips.
