“This is impossible!” Lacey’s voice rose in a shrill cry, thick with jealousy. “Alpha Grayson is a great wolf king—why would he ever lower himself to desire a useless creature like you, someone who doesn’t even have a wolf?”

“Unfortunately for you,” I replied with a cold smile, “your opinion doesn’t decide anything.”

The lie had already left my lips; I might as well carry it through. Better to let them believe this fiction than to risk exposing Aaron.
