Chapter 6

Arabella’s POV

“I'm a lawyer! So you've got to let me go!” I snapped at one of the police officers. “I know the law and I know my rights!”

“Well then, you shouldn't have killed someone then.”

I fell back, realising that there's no way I'm getting out this night.

“I didn't kill anyone!” I yelled, hitting the metal cage that held us in. “I didn't kill anyone!”

I kept screaming, but no one listened to me. Eventually, I broke into tears. I didn't kill anyone, and yet I've been arrested for it.

I sat in one corner of the cell, with the several ladies that were in there, and I sobbed in peace. I can't go to jail, because I have put several people in there, and they'd not hesitate to come after me, or send people after me.

I had never been so security conscious as I tasked my brain to find out who Silas was. I was shaking and breathing raggedly when one of the officers called my name.

“Arabella Wilson!” He called, and I sprung to my feet.

“I'm right here.” I said, and they all looked at me like I was about to get some preferential treatment.

I was taken outside, and the police led me out to see Skye and Alexander standing out for me. There was a third guy with them, but none of that mattered. I ran over to Skye, and I hugged her tightly, shedding tears of sorrow.

“No contact please.” The police officer snapped in the most gentle way possible to avoid attracting attention.

“Are you fine?” Alexander asked, moving closer to me since Skye was lost of words.

“I've never felt better.” I answered sarcastically. “Well no.”

I shook my head, and I cried some more.

“Arabella, just hang in there and stay strong for just a short while.” He said. “I've gotten you Harris Finch, he's the best lawyer in town, and I'm pretty sure that he'll get you out of this in no time.”

“When's the bail hearing? I can't survive in here tonight.” I said, trying hard to maintain composure.

“I found a way to make it tomorrow morning, and I promise that you'll be out by afternoon, and back to your home. Just hang in there for tonight.” Alexander said, and I nodded.

“Please, don't get into any sort of trouble with the ladies.” Skye begged, going on to say very inaudible words.

“Hang in there, Arabella. We'll get you out safely, I promise.” Alexander said.

“What do they have on me?” I asked, looking into his concerned eyes.

“Don't worry about it, we'll sort it out by morning. Trust me.” Alexander assured me.

I was concerned that I had put too much pressure on the poor man. My fake boyfriend shouldn't be the one bailing me out of trouble. He shouldn't even be aware that I'm facing a murder charge.

I wonder how I'd be able to look at him after all this madness.

The officer took me back to the cell, but this time, it was to an empty cell.

“What? Why?” I asked fearfully, thinking something was about to happen to me.

“Mr Alexander asked that you be kept in a private cell, and trust me, that request doesn't come in lightly.” He said, pushing me inside, and locking the door. “I wonder why he involves himself with criminals like you when he's such a man of Honor.”

“You're racist. You reek of it.” I hissed at him, feeling my insides churning because of it. The officer walked away without responding to me, and I fell to the ground.

***

Morning came, and all I could think of was the bail hearing. I had made up my mind to get free of his evil charge, and I can't do it from prison.

I was escorted to the courthouse where I had been several times. I could see Skye, Alexander, a few of my acquaintances, and even Justin seated in court. Alexander was looking at me, like if he could get me out of where I was seated, he'd force me out already.

Justin on the other hand, was busy on his phone, and I was just happy that he didn't get to see me looking all homeless and unkempt.

Mr Harris Finch, a living legend of the wonders a lawyer could do, was walking towards me. I wasn't really paying attention when Alexander was talking about him, and I was even not so believing until I saw him.

I was too starstruck to say anything to him, so I just nodded while he did all the speaking, and once he was done, I heaved a sigh.

“The state vs Arabella Wilson?” The judge called. She had rejected the bail of almost everyone that came before me that I was already seeing a pattern, and it wasn't ending on me. I was shaking my legs, trying to calm my mind, but I was really nervous.

“Representative here, ma'am.” Harris said, walking into the dock. Both the judge and the prosecuting lawyer were happy about seeing him, and maybe this might mean something good.

“How are you?” The judge asked, and they literally spoke for almost a minute.

When they were done catching up, they moved back to me.

“My client here possesses no flight risk. The highest she's done has only gotten her a parking ticket, and she has strong ties to the community here, being a lawyer.” Harris said. “It's only reasonable to release her on bail, until her innocence is proven.”

“Prosecution?” The judge called.

“Erm… the prosecution asks that bail be denied. Murder is a very heinous crime, regardless of how innocent the accused comes of as.” He argued.

“I'm pretty sure I didn't say anything about innocence, but since you're projecting the right circumstances, I'll agree with that.” Harris said. This was clearly easy for him.

“The defendant will be granted bail, and bail is set at a hundred thousand dollars.” The judge said, and I heaved a sigh of relief.

Now, it's time to find the bastard that put me in this position.
