Where are you? I’m almost at the hospital.
My phone was in my hand with the text message app open. I had been staring at the texts I sent my husband five minutes ago for so long that the letters were beginning to dance around in front of my eyes. A tear threatened to escape my eyes, but I forced it back. I wasn’t about to cry now because of Chase. Especially not in front of my housekeeper.
Maya was our live-in housekeeper, and she was currently driving me to the hospital for my regular prenatal check ups. Yes, I was currently four months pregnant, and my husband couldn’t be bothered to show up for what was supposed to be one of the most precious moments of our lives.
The car suddenly felt way too hot. It felt like a cage. I glanced at the seat beside me. My blood felt way too hot. Chase should have been sitting here, right next to me. I know that he didn’t care, but he should have at least pretended to. For our baby’s sake. He couldn’t even be bothered to respond to my messages.
I took a deep breath and tried to calm myself as I recalled my mother-inlaw’s words from earlier. “Chase will be at the hospital with you. He promised, so you have nothing to worry about.”
Even if I didn’t trust my husband’s actions most of the time, I trusted his mother, Rosana. She had been nothing but supportive of me from the very beginning. She couldn’t have lied to me, right?
Or maybe she was just trying to be hopeful too.
I shook my head, dismissing the voice in my head. Chase would show up. Maybe something was just keeping him late. We were supposed to listen to the baby’s heartbeat for the first time today. He had to be there.
“Mrs Carrington? Ma’am?”
I was jerked back to reality when Maya gently nudged me from the driver’s seat. I looked up at her, still a little out of it.
Maya frowned. One side of her lips was slightly curved downward, the way it did when she was worried or confused. I’d always thought it was quite funny. “We’re here, Mrs Carrington. Do you want to wait by the entrance while i find somewhere to park?”
“Oh… uh…” I’d been so far away that I hadn't even noticed when the car stopped moving. I looked out the window at the private hospital building in front of us, it was mostly made of glass and had so many floors that I’d lose count if I tried to count them. It was the kind of building you looked at and just knew that it would be filled with rich snobs from all walks of life.
Only the best for Mr Carrington’s little wife.
“Ma’am?” Maya called again. “Are you okay?”
“Right, yeah I'm alright. I’m just a bit tired today. I’ll wait by the entrance.”
I stepped out of the car and a little bit away from the entrance of the hospital, clutching the strap of my bag in my hand. I was anxious. I had no idea why, but I was. A couple walked by me. The pretty blonde woman was heavily pregnant; it looked like she would be popping out her baby any day now. But that wasn’t what drew my eyes to her. It was the way the man walking with her looked at her with so much devotion as they laughed at something. An inside joke maybe? He had his arm around her waist. They looked perfect together.
My mood dampened even more. I turned away from them to focus on something else when my phone vibrated in my hand. I quickly looked at it. It was a text from Chase.
Chase- I'll be there.
It was simple and straight to the point, but it was enough to lift my spirits. My lips curled into a small smile. I read the text over and over again until–
“Mrs Carrington!”
I looked up just in time to see the car coming at me with full force. My eyes widened, and my hands instinctively covered my stomach. The car came to a halt barely inches away from. I fell to the floor with my hands still wrapped protectively around my stomach. Maya looked scared as she ran toward me.
“Shit! Oh shit!” A voice cursed.
I wasn’t paying attention to anything except the tears falling down my cheeks and my hands around my stomach.
“No,” I whimpered. “No no no no, my baby.”
“Miss? Are you okay? I am so sorry.” I looked up to find the source of the voice. A man was staring down at me. It must be the driver of the car that had almost hit me. I looked around in a daze, to see that a small crowd had gathered. “Are you alright?” He asked again.
I opened my mouth, but all that came out was, “my baby.”
The sound of Maya’s slippers got closer and then she crouched down in front of me. “Are you okay, ma’am?”
“Take me… take me to the doctor.” I managed to say, reluctantly letting go of my stomach in order for Maya to help me stand up.
I let out the biggest sigh of relief when the doctor said that my baby was fine and that I was worried for nothing. But even as Maya and I walked out of the big glass hospital doors, I couldn’t stop thinking about the accident.
I’d barely stepped out of the doors when someone ran in front of me. I looked up in confusion before my mind registered who it was. It was the driver from earlier. He was tall, with dark hair and a very defined face. He had a broad chest, one that made it obvious that he worked out.
“Hey.” His voice was deep, and smooth.
“Hi…” I answered unsure.
He scratched the back of his head, and his eyes flitted around before they finally settled on me again. “I just thought I should wait and make sure you were okay.”
“Oh… yeah, I am. I was just in shock.”
“Allow me to apologize. I’m really sorry. I had no idea someone would be standing there, I should have checked before taking such a sharp turn.”
I smiled softly. A lot of people would have just left, but he had stayed to see if I was okay. That was nice. I was about to say something in return when I was suddenly interrupted by a thunderous voice that I would recognize anywhere.
“What the hell is going on here!?”
