DOUBLE CROSS THE BOSS

Maddy’s words felt like they had a disarming factor in them as her legs felt too weak to be lifted.

“But…how are we sure they killed my parents?”

A wry smile appeared on Maddy’s face, “because I was there, Emily.” Her eyes sparkled as they became wet. “I used to work under your father a rookie in the police force. I had just gone in to tender my findings on the Morales biggest trafficking showdown when they burst into the apartment.” Her voice cracked as her tears got in the way, “Ryan and his men stormed in, shooting vigorously. Your mum handed you to me to run as fast as I could.”

Emily felt a rising swell in her throat as her heart was blazing in rage. “This doesn’t make sense. If you were a police rookie, how did you turn into…this?”

“Because I couldn’t stand the corruption anymore. They all turned a blind eye refusing to serve justice…that’s why I left and started this gang. Taking laws into my own hands.”

Emily nodded mechanically, “With all the power and weapons you have…why didn’t you serve them revenge since?”

Maddy wiped her eyes, “because the Morales mafia gang is not like anything you could just infiltrate. They didn’t gain fear and respect by just being a gang…they earned it.” Rising to her feet, she pulled out a dusty cardboard and spreading it on her desk.

Emily attempted to decipher the drawings and names on the cardboard but was unable to.

“What’s this?”

“Gang Morales hierarchy information.” She pointed at the top of the pyramid, “Ryan Morales and his family are on the very top of the food chain. They stayed in plain sight but not even the drunkest fool wouldn’t dare them. They controlled everything…the drugs, weapons, and smuggling.”

Emily nodded as Maddy continued, “These are their affiliations and endorsements with the higher-ups like Senator Brandon.” She breathed, “Trust me, there are many more in their clique that make touching them impossible.”

“If it’s so impossible, how do I get in?”

“Here!” Her index rested on a large white circle at the top of the pyramid. “A few years ago, the Morales came up with the idea of going clean and they set up a legal chain of businesses and outlets all under the Morales group and it’s is headed by Ryan’s first son, Logan Morales.”

Emily ran her fingers through her bouncy hair, “if they control the police and MIA, so why do they have to set up a clean chain of business?”

Folding her hands, Maddy shrugged, “I don’t know but I believe they are up to something. But you must be aware of something…not all the Morales are psyched about the clean business deal. Rumors have it that there may be a division.”

“May?”

“Yes, that’s where you come in!”

“Am I supposed to go get revenge on my parents or be a spy?”

Shaking her head, she said, “I’m afraid you might have to be both if you want to survive Blackwood Heights.”

Emily’s fist clenched, “I’ll kill him…in the most painful way. Hang his family on a pole and have him watch.”

“That’s my girl.” Maddy massaged her shoulders. “Gabriella has handled some of your infiltration plans. First thing on Saturday morning, you’ll be going for your first interview ladybird.”

It explained why Emily had her butt glued to the leather seat watching Logan scan her files. She didn’t spend her time examining the résumé Gabriella prepared for her. All her blood cried out for was revenge and would stop at nothing to get it.

Logan glanced at her at intervals. Almost like he looked shocked every time he raised his head.

“So, how come you got your master's and PhD in management science and you’re just 25?”

Emily held back herself from gasping, 25? I’m just 20. But she forced a smile, “I’ve always had a deep love for management and I couldn’t stop learning about it.”

Thinning his eyes, “Honestly, I would have sworn you were just 19 when you walked in. You’re young, don’t you think taking a personal assistant job would be too tasking for a 25-year-old?”

“No…I’ve done way more tasking jobs. How tasking can drawing your schedules be?”

“Including traveling with me?”

A smirk appeared on her face, “I’d love to travel with you.”

Logan furrowed his brows. He had never had an interview with only one applicant before. He needed an assistant and right now the only one he got was the auburn lady sitting in front of him with a terrible accent.

“Fine! Miss Emily, you got the job but you’re on probation. This means you’ll be on a fifty percent off salary for three months.”

He watched her keenly for the slightest disappointment but Emily still wore an indifferent expression. “I don’t mind.”

“The company won’t be providing accommodation for you. I see here…you’re not based in Blackwood Heights.”

“I’ll find a place.”

Logan swallowed hard before stretching his hands out for a handshake. “You got the job…you can meet Linda, my branch manager for your appointment letter. You’ll resume on Monday.”

He watched as she turned to leave. His eyes greedily examined her curves. He hit his head, “focus, Logan!”

He couldn’t tell but there was something in her eyes that pulled him. A fiery glint, almost like she intimidated him every step of the way.

Receiving the appointment letter from Linda, Emily feigned a smile. “Thank you.”

Linda instead pulled her closer, “No matter what you do never try to double-cross the boss. I hope you are prepared for the danger that might come with the job?”

Emily pushed back, “You’re asking the wrong question to the wrong person. I hope he’s ready too?”

Her fingers nibbled the letter, “but thank you for this though.” She enjoyed the shock on Linda’s face as she walked out on her.

Stepping out of the elevator, she picked up her phone. “Hello, Maddy?” A silence ensued for some seconds before she affirmed, “It worked, I’m in.”
