Chapter 5

Deception

Leo's pov

I sat in my dorm room, my mind racing as I needed a convincing back story for my persona. I had to be meticulous, ensuring that every detail was perfect. I scribbled notes on a piece of paper, creating a family history that would fool even the most discerning person.

"Okay, let's see," I thought to myself. "My parents are John and Emily, both teachers at a local high school. They're kind, supportive, and encourage me to pursue my passions."

As I worked on my backstory, I felt a sense of loss. It was as if I was creating a character for a play, someone who wasn't really me. But I knew I had to be convincing, had to make people believe that I was Leo, the quiet and reserved student.

Just then, my friend Cassius walked into my room. "Hey, Leo, what's up?" he asked, noticing the papers scattered across my desk.

I quickly gathered them up, not wanting him to see what I was working on. "Just studying for a test," I said, trying to sound casual.

Cassius nodded, seemingly unaware of what I was really doing. "Need any help?" he asked, walking over to my desk.

I shook my head, feeling a sense of gratitude towards my friend. "No, I've got it covered," I said. "But thanks for offering."

Cassius leaned against the desk, eyeing me curiously. "You're always so focused, Leo," he said. "I don't know how you do it."

I shrugged, trying to play it cool. "I just try to stay organized, I guess," I said.

Cassius nodded, smiling. "You're a good role model, Leo," he said. "I'm going to try to be more like you."

I felt a pang of guilt, knowing that my friend didn't really know me. But I pushed the feeling aside, focusing on the task at hand.

As Cassius left, I felt a sense of relief. My secret was still safe, and I was determined to keep it that way.

I spent the rest of the day rehearsing my backstory, making sure that I could recall every detail perfectly. I knew that I had to be prepared, that Ryder could ask me anything at any time.

As I walked through the halls of Alpha Academy, I felt confident that I was Leo, and I was ready to take on whatever came my way.

But as I turned a corner, I saw Ryder watching me, a hint of a smile on his face. My heart skipped a beat, and I felt a surge of adrenaline.

"Hey, Leo," Ryder said, falling into step beside me. "I've been meaning to ask you something."

I nodded, trying to look relaxed. "What's up?" I asked.

Ryder smiled. "I was just wondering about your family," he said. "What are your parents like?"

I launched into the backstory I had created, telling Ryder about John and Emily, about my family vacations and my little sister Sophia. Ryder listened intently, his eyes never leaving mine.

"That sounds great," Ryder said, nodding. "I'm sure they're really proud of you."

I smiled, feeling a sense of pride. "Yeah, they're always supporting me," I said.

Ryder's eyes narrowed slightly, and a skeptical look was seen on his face. "That's really cool," he said. "I'm sure it's not always easy, though."

I shook my head, trying to appear confident. "No, it's not too bad," I said. "I like my family. They're really great."

Ryder nodded, his expression unreadable. "I'm sure they are," he said. "Well, I'll let you get back to your day, Leo. It was nice talking to you."

As Ryder walked away, I felt a sense of relief wash over me. I had done it. I had created a convincing backstory, and I had fooled Ryder.

But as I looked into Ryder's retreating back, I saw something that made my heart skip a beat. A glimmer of doubt, and a suspicious pose.

I knew that I had to be careful, that I couldn't let my guard down for a moment.

************************************************

I sat in front of my mirror, staring at my reflection as I carefully considered every detail of my persona I wanted to make sure that I was convincing, that no one would suspect that I was hiding behind a mask.

"Okay, let's see," I thought to myself. "As a child, I was always fascinated by technology and innovation. I spent hours tinkering with gadgets and machines, trying to figure out how they worked."

I nodded to myself, satisfied with the direction I was heading. I began to jot down notes, fleshing out my backstory and personality traits.

Just then, my friend Cassius walked into my room. "Hey, Leo, what's up?" he asked, noticing the papers scattered across my desk.

I quickly gathered them up, not wanting him to see what I was working on. "Just working on a project for robotics club," I said, trying to sound casual.

Cassius nodded, seemingly unaware of what I was really doing. "Need any help?" he asked.

I shook my head, feeling a sense of gratitude towards my friend. "No, I've got it covered," I said. "But thanks for offering."

As Cassius left, I returned to crafting my persona. I thought about my interests and hobbies, deciding that he would be an avid reader and a fan of science fiction.

I began to imagine what my room would look like, decorating it with posters of galaxies and spacecraft. I pictured myself spending hours looking over books on physics and astronomy, devouring knowledge like a hungry student.

As I continued to work on my persona, I felt a sense of excitement building inside me. I was creating a character that was both believable and intriguing, someone that people would want to get to know.

But just as I was starting to feel confident, Ryder walked into the room, his eyes scanning the space as if searching for something. "Hey, Leo," he said, his voice low and smooth. "What's going on?"

My heart skipped a beat as I tried to compose myself. "Just working on this robotics project," I said, trying to sound nonchalant.

Ryder's eyes narrowed, and I could sense a hint of skepticism. "You're always working on something, Leo," he said. "Don't you ever get bored?"

I shrugged, trying to appear confident. "I like building things," I said. "It keeps my hands busy."

Ryder nodded, having a nonchalant look on his face. "I'm sure it does," he said. "Well, I'll let you get back to your project, Leo. It was nice talking to you."
