''Due to my early intervention, the patient has become stable. I am done for the night.'' I started to gather my things. My stethoscope and other materials were in my hand as I said, ''I will meet his primary physician this morning to discuss what I found.''
To my surprise, Damien replied to me; ''You will stay here until I am done with you.'' He stepped between me and the door as he commanded in such a tone.
''I report to the hospital, Damien, not to you,'' came my reply.
Damien flashed a chilling smile. His expression was flat and carried no iota of warmth in it.
''Mira, who gives the hospital all the orders that you scramble to adhere to?'' While he asked me that, he took out his phone and gave me a dismissive gesture.
''Come to my study in five minutes, and consider yet another secondary duty.''
I felt so defeated as I stood there. Damien was delighted to remind me that his power especially over me, was absolute.
Just like Damien had ordered, I was in his study within the next five minutes. The study was expansive and opulent. The study was so big, it was twice the size of the entire apartment that me and my parents now lived in.
Behind a mahogany desk, Damien stood, waiting for me. The lights that reflected from outside the city, twinkled in through the window. He gestured to the seat in fron of him; the hot seat. It wasn't behind the desk, but a stiff chair, solitary, and one that would give me the chilling feels of being interrogated by a higher-up.
He ordered me, ''sit,'' and I sat.
Damien rested his chin inside his palm as he began to talk to me. ''We will address your behaviour in this place.''
''You are a highly competent doctor, and that was proven this night. Unfortunately, you didn't have such an integrity seven years ago. Seven years ago, you abandoned the man that you claimed to love, just because you wanted to live lavish.''
Damien's words were pressing, but I didn't flinch in my expression. ''All that has ever happened was in the past, and it has nothing to do with my current duties as a professional,'' I replied.
However, Damien was quick to refute. ''On the contrary!''He countered my words and leaned forward towards me. ''Everything is connected. You returned to this city and to your career which you deem to love so much. You thought the past no longer exists, right? You thought it was buried. Well, here I am to exhume it, to dig it out and throw it at you and set it on display for everyone to see.''
Damien shifted his gaze to my face which was drained beyond words. My uniform was also rumpled and I looked every bit of untidy.
''Guess what we are going to do for each other, Mira?'' he continued with his ice cold demeanour. ''We are going to help each other achieve our goals.''
''Since you desperately need this job, and I want you to suffer we will work with each other to win our goals.'' Damien's voice dropped to a whisper that felt heavier than yelling with an angry emotion.
''From today, we will revise your duties here. You will now serve as the wellness consultant for Rupert Corporations for all public events, as well as be Mr. Davis's caretaker.''
''Wellness Consultant? What does that mean?'' I asked, blinking in genuine confusion.
''What it simply means is that you will attend all my social events with me. Galas, auctions, press announcements, even board dinners. I will introduce you well, as a top physician in the region from the Landon family. The family which have now fallen from the top.''
''I am not a socialite, Damien. I am a doctor, a cardiac specialist. I am not interested in any pretentious parties. My job is not in a ball room, but at an operating room.'' I said all that standing up as I protested.
''We are saying the same thing,'' he replied as he got up as well. He was in a pleasured mood, excited about ruining my ego. His eyes carried malice and indifference.
''Mira, you won't be a guest there, or as my equal, no. Far from it. You will be attending as my help, my paid help.''
Damien walked around the desk and stoped right in front of me.
''You will follow me anywhere I go. If there is any minor emergency, like a head ache, or a twisted ankle, or maybe if my wife mistakenly spills drink on her dress, you will be at my beck and call to take care of it. As a personal assistant to me in medical terms, you will put on a specified uniform so that everyone can know who you are and identify you easily.
You can put on the same uniform you wore today, or swap the color with something sharper.''
I froze. In fact, my blood stopped flowing. This was more than revenge, but something deeper. Damien wanted to cement my humiliation by forcing me to wear a uniform in public. He wanted to display me to the elite class who used to respect me before. All the people who knew my family and used to respect them were there.
''You are not serious, are you?'' I asked warily. I already started to feel humiliated, my body already ached of it.
With a hot breath close to my ear, Damien replied, ''I am perfectly serious.''
''Everybody here and in future events, will see you, Dr.Mira, the disgraced heiress of the Landon family. They would see her wearing a uniform to serve the man who disgraced her family. With so much professionalism, she will perform her duties with eagerness to serve.
If you fail to serve adequately, like failing to adjust my wife's hair, or failing to pick up a napkin on the floor, you will lose even more than you have lost. The only thing you have to be proud of will be snatched from you.''
Dramatically, Damien stretched his hand and adjusted the collar of my uniform. My skin crawled when his fingers touched my skin.
''You will lose your job, Mira, as well as your entire family's last hope.''
With a smirk to enact his victory, he stepped back. ''You can home now,Mira. You look drained and ugly. Go and get ready for your next task. It is a gala. This is your first assignement so try not to mess it up.''
When I staggered out of the study, I almost fell over. The floor, polished and expensive, felt like quicksand under me. I was drowning. Damien had killed two birds with one stone. He had saved his future father-in-law, as well as made sure that his weapon of mass destruction against me was active.
He was coming right after my dignity, and not just merely my career. Damien had trapped me beyond just his power, but the uniform he made me wear to identify my humiliated self.
I would be an epitome of failure in this uniform, and Damien will delightfully soak it all in.
