Even though I had barked out orders to the nurses, I didn't wait for them. I hit the emergency alarm button as I tried to stabilize Mr. Davis' head and neck.
I pulled the cart towards me quickly and ripped open the box that contained the IV medication. Luckily, I had already stocked everything prior to this day, so it was a breeze for me. The other nurses ''assisting'' me were all confused, but I ignored them and inserted the IV.
I administered the first dosage and then barked out more orders into the intercom. I demanded the hospital's ambulance team. Everything was happening so fast, I had to be the specialist even though I was not hired in that regard.
The medication had just started to take effect, and the monitors beeped slowly, when the door burst open. I looked up and saw that it was Damien.
Damien had heard the alarm from his study and hurried over. I noticed the panic in his face, which usually carried indifference and domination.
A situation he could not control, Damien saw his future father-in-law frail, pale, and limp, with me sweating profusely as I just finished saving him. My gray and undignified uniform was stained and ragged, but my hands were steady as I dished out commanding gestures to those around me.
''What's going on here?'' Damien barked. He strode towards the bed with his voice breaking the calm I had struggled so hard to return to the surroundings.
''Don't touch him, Damien! Stay back there.'' I snapped at Damien with the authoritative tone of a doctor and not a mere caretaker. With my body, I blocked Damien off from Mr. Davis, shielding the sick man.
''He had a crisis just now, and a hypertensive one. I have just administered some emergency treatment to him that, if you interfere with, will kill him.'' Adrenaline surged through my body, considering the risk I was taking.
As soon as I said that, Damien stopped inches away from me. His eyes were wide as they burned into mine, and his fear turned to rage. With a grip like iron, he grabbed my arm.
''You did this deliberately, right? You did not monitor him!'' Damien sneered at me and dragged me away from Mr. Davis. ''You want to sabotage me, right? I knew I shouldn't have hired you. What a big mistake.''
When Damien said those words, they hit me. Each word hit me with fury that overcame how tired and drained I was. I didn't feel pain, but deep anger towards Damien at the time. What I did next sent shock across the entire room. I shoved Damien backwards with a strength I didn't know I had. I broke free from his grip and shoved him away.
My voice was filled with contempt, low and icy; it made everyone uncomfortable. However, I went back to the bedside of Mr. Davis.
''Mr. Woods, what do you think you are doing? This is beyond upsetting. I just saved the life of this man. He had a crisis just now due to stress and other factors that I noted in the charts days ago. While I spoke, I pointed at the monitor, which was now stable.
''Damien, just because you are petty and you want to take revenge against me, does not mean that I no longer know my job. You hired me as a caretaker instead of the doctor that I am, but that does not mean that my medical knowledge and skills have become inadequate. If I were trying to sabotage anything, would I bring him back to life? Please get out of my sight.''
I had lost every single composure I had. At this point, I was devastatingly defiant. Damien noticed at once that I was done pretending. I was no longer the ex-girlfriend struggling to show signs of repentance, but a doctor, the one he was desperately trying to humiliate.
While we looked at each other, for a split second, I saw the boy I used to know in Damien's eyes. The awe he used to have for me flickered alive before the cold hatred entered his eyes.
The emergency ambulance arrived and cut short the confrontation between me and Damien. The presence was proof that I did not try to sabotage Mr. Davis. Damien stood still with his jaw clenched as I briefed the head of the team that had just arrived. He was staring at the woman who had just rendered him powerless in his own house, at the same time, saving the life of his father-in-law.
Damien saw that the game had changed. I had become a threat after proving my value to him. He could not control me anymore. The game had changed.
The ambulance took Mr. Davis with them, and I could hear their siren fade into the distance. The nurses who were supposed to have assisted me were all frantic and scattered, and afraid. It left me alone with Damien in the luxurious bedroom to figure out our mess.
The air was heavy with the aftermath of our emergency.
Damien was stoic. His composure was mixed between being smooth and rough at the edges. His eyes were as cold as steel, and they were fixed on me. His presence asserted so much power and dominance, Damien didn't need to move towards me to make his impact felt.
''Dr Landon, how dare you? You have the audacity.'' With a voice low, dangerous, and direct, Damien spoke to me. ''You dare to come to my home and defy my orders? In front of everyone, including my staff, I asked you to stay away, yet you dared to lay your hands on me?''
''I was busy trying to save a life,'' I replied, my own voice steady, yet hoarse. ''Because of your interference, something would have gone wrong, and the man would have died. Have you ever read the hospital's policies concerning how others should act around patients? You might be the owner of the company, but there is more to it.''
Damien's jaw twitched in anger. The fact that I used my professional title seemed to upset him more than the fact that I pushed him violently earlier.
