Chapter 6 A Dive and a Guardian Angel

The unspoken connection between Maya and Leo had only deepened. Their banter masked something warmer beneath the surface. They texted constantly, exchanged glances longer than necessary, and their encounters on the training ground had started to blur the lines between rivals and... something else. Neither of them said it, but both felt the current pulling them closer.

It was on the eve of a high-stakes derby that the fragile veil was torn.

“Big game tomorrow,” Maya said, nudging Leo with her elbow as they crossed paths in the corridor.

Leo stopped, his signature smirk curling at the corners. “You nervous for us?”

“Hardly,” she replied with mock seriousness. “Just don’t embarrass the club. I like winning.”

He chuckled. “Touching. I’ll make sure to dedicate my goal to you.”

She grinned. “You mean your stretcher ride?”

They both laughed, the sound lingering longer than their words.

Match day exploded with energy. Maya sat next to Chloe in the stands, a sea of supporters around them. Her eyes kept darting to the field, locking onto Leo, who paced like a lion ready to pounce.

“You’re doing it again,” Chloe said, stuffing popcorn in her mouth.

“Doing what?” Maya asked, though she already knew.

“Staring at him like he’s the answer to all your tactical dreams.”

Maya rolled her eyes. “He’s just... focused. That’s all.”

Chloe raised a brow. “Sure. And I’m just here for the snacks.”

The match unfolded like a fuse on fire fast and dangerous. Then it happened.

“Leo’s through!” the announcer shouted.

Leo broke away from two defenders, dashing toward the goal. A rival midfielder lunged recklessly studs up.

The crack echoed across the stadium.

“LEO!” Maya shot to her feet.

He crashed to the turf, body twisted, unmoving.

“Oh my God,” Chloe whispered.

Maya’s hands clenched the railing. “Get up... please get up.”

The medical team sprinted out. The crowd fell silent.

Maya’s breathing turned shallow. She remembered her own injury. The numbness. The panic.

Then, finally, he stirred.

Relief swept the stands. Leo was helped off, limping badly. But before he disappeared down the tunnel, he turned. His eyes scanned, landed on Maya.

Their gaze locked.

“He’s looking at you,” Chloe murmured.

Maya nodded slowly. “I saw.”

The diagnosis came the next day: severe ankle sprain. No fracture. No surgery. But he’d be out for weeks.

Maya stood outside the rehab room, clutching a sports drink. She hesitated, then knocked.

“Come in.”

Leo looked up from the replay on the TV. His smirk was missing.

“Didn’t expect you,” he said, his voice low.

“I brought electrolytes,” Maya said, holding out the bottle. “You looked... dehydrated.”

He gave a faint chuckle. “Thoughtful. Never thought I’d see you playing nurse.”

“I’m not. I’m just checking on a teammate.”

He tilted his head. “Just a teammate?”

She ignored the question and sat. “Does it hurt?”

“Like hell.”

“I know what that’s like,” she said quietly. “Being sidelined messes with your head.”

Leo studied her. “You were scared yesterday.”

She blinked. “Excuse me?”

“Don’t play dumb. You jumped up like the stadium was on fire.”

She sighed. “Fine. I was scared. Happy now?”

He softened. “Yeah... because it means you care.”

A pause. Then….

“When I was on the ground, all I could think was, ‘Damn, I never told her.’”

“Told me what?” she asked, her voice a whisper.

Leo fumbled with the bottle cap. She reached over.

“Here.”

Their fingers touched. They froze.

“Maya...”

She looked up. “Don’t say it. Not yet. Just... get better first.”

He nodded, his eyes locked on hers. “But I will say it. Soon.”

For a moment, the world paused. In that sterile room filled with medical charts and the faint smell of disinfectant, Maya let herself feel the truth: she was falling. And Leo? Maybe he’d already landed.
