Swiftly, I went back to my seat, pretending I wasn't just ransacking his office.
“Here we go,” he said, passing me the document to sign. I shared a nervous smile and took it from him, read through it a bit and signed it, not like my signature will matter since this whole operation is fake. He probably won't even hear from me after now.
“That'll be all, Mr Alex, it was nice doing business with you “ I stretched out my hand for a handshake.
"The pleasure is all mine, Ricardo." We both exchanged a firm handshake as he led me out of the office.
The whole time, all I could think about was how to get my hands on that file.
I had to think fast, I won't be able to get back here using the same disguise. Neither can I sneak in; the security here can't be taken out by a one-man soldier. Besides, they've already seen my face, which will make it even more difficult.
We walked down the hallway, and I thought of a way to get back into his office. I quickly took off my watch and placed it in my jacket when he wasn't paying attention.
“OMG,” I exclaimed.
“What's the matter?” Ricardo asked, turning in surprise.
“I think I left my watch in your office”, I said in panic.
“Oh, what does it look like, so I'll go get it for you?” he replied.
“Ehm, don't worry, I'll get it myself, just help me hold my bag while I run down.” I had to act as unsuspecting as possible. If I go in empty-handed and come out empty-handed, he has no reason to suspect me.
He nodded taking the bag from me as I hastily walked back to his office, I went straight to the drawer, opened it, and brought out the document, there was no point bringing the entire file along with me, I hastily tore the document from it's base, folded it into my jacket and walked out of the office.. Except he needs the file presently, there's no way he'd notice the documents were gone.
Taking out my watch from my pocket, I held it up to him, "I found it, the nut must have come loose, that's why I didn't notice when it fell off." I shrugged like it was nothing.
"Ahhh, that happens all the time." He responded by passing my bag to me.
"It sure does. I should be on my way, it's getting late."
"Yes, yes.. You should. Do you need me to arrange a car for you?"
"Not at all, my driver is waiting for me outside." He nodded and walked me to the entrance.
Miguel was waiting just outside the building. I got into the car and he drove off.
I brought out the document from my pocket and compared it to the finance records the chief had given to me, and just like he had suspected, it was night and day.
There was over half a billion dollars unaccounted for; the company was being robbed. I know the company was into shady business, but this is a new low.
Just as my eyes were still fixated on the files the car was hit from the back, Miguel matched on the brake forcefully making it make a screeching sound and come to a halt.
"What the fuc..!!" I tried to turn around to see who had hit our car.
It was an SUV van, the passenger seat door flew open, and Ricardo got out, with two of his boys behind him.
"Move Miguel, go..go..go." I tapped him, urging him to move.
He stepped on the gas and zoomed off immediately. Why did he come after me? How did he notice the file was gone so soon?
"Faster, Miguel," I shouted, throwing glances behind my shoulder. The van wasn't slacking behind as well. It was just inches away from coming in contact with us.
Miguel took a sharp left turn, giving us the advantage a little, but before I could say Jack Robinson, they were on our tail again, but this time, they were shooting at us.
“Don't slow down”, I yelled at Miguel again. I felt sorry I had to drag him into this mess, but from the looks of it, he seems not to mind. This isn't his first rodeo. I brought out my gun and opened the car window, firing back at them.
People on the street started running helter-skelter. First, it was just the van that was shooting at us, seconds later, two other vehicles joined in.
It was chaos on the streets.
Fortunately for me, Miguel is a good driver who knows every inch of this God forsaken city, and unfortunately for them, when I shoot, I DON'T MISS.
The chase was intense, leaving destruction and chaos along the streets, and poor old Miguel was starting to panic.
“We need to get off their radar, Miguel”, I yelled at him while pulling out my other gun, tossing the one without a bullet..
I didn't want to hurt anyone, but I had no choice since shots were being fired at us. I might not have anyone I'm living for doesn't mean I want to die, especially not in Colombia.
I had to do something, something that doesn't include killing anyone, of course, because this whole thing could be sorted out easily by the chairman, so there was no need to escalate it.
I aimed the tire of Ricardo's van and shot at it. The tire let out a loud'bang'and burst, making the driver lose control. One down, two to go.
"To the left, Miguel.." I said, targeting the other car. I shot the windshield to try to scare the driver.. But I'm in the city, these guys have been handling guns since they could walk, not even a gun to their head would scare them.
With my first shot unsuccessful, I shot the car in the tyre and missed, it hit another car parked by the side of the road, causing it to go up in flames.
Just as I peeled back into the car, Miguel took a sharp right turn into another street, and the second car couldn't handle it, so it somersaulted into a bakery by the side of the road.
Luckily, the ruckus had made everyone take cover, so the bakery was closed.
"I think we lost them," Miguel said with relief evident in his voice.
"Yeah, I think so too," I replied, resting my head on the chair.
Good thing we lost them when we did, cause from the looks of it, I have just one bullet left.
"They're behind us again," Miguel shouted, jolting me to alertness.
