I look at Zarah in confusion. “Heard what?”

“What our boss said!” Zarah’s eyes are sparkling, and it makes me smile.

“Yes, I heard, but so what?”

“So what? It’s a big deal, Rose. The boss is talking about getting you a special present. And it’s not even your birthday. I mean, what does that even mean ‘special’ present? Don’t tell me it’s your code word for penis,” Zarah says thoughtfully.
