Maya's POV

Theresa knocked softly on my door. “Maya? It’s time to go,” she said. “The police said it’s safer if you don’t stay here tonight.”

I looked up at her. “Yeah, I know,” I said. My voice sounded calm, but inside, everything was a mess.

My heart was still thudding in my chest like it hadn’t calmed down since the police left.
