Chapter 5: Into the Abyss

The first thing Selene felt was the cold, a bone-deep chill that seemed to seep into her very soul. She blinked her eyes open, trying to make sense of her surroundings, but all she could see was darkness—thick, oppressive, and endless.

Panic clawed at her chest. *Where am I?*

She tried to stand, but her limbs felt heavy, as if something was pulling her down, anchoring her to the ground. Her heart raced, her pulse thundering in her ears as her mind scrambled for answers. The last thing she remembered was the blinding light in the Council chamber—the figure of darkness, the overwhelming power... and then nothing.

Was this a trap? Another one of the Cabal’s twisted games?

“Selene.”

The voice came from somewhere in the shadows, low and familiar. Relief washed over her as she recognized it.

“Lucian?” she called out, her voice hoarse. “Where are you?”

“I’m here,” he said, his form materializing from the darkness like a ghost. His steel-blue eyes gleamed in the dim light, but there was a tension in his expression, an edge that made her uneasy. “Are you alright?”

“I—I think so,” she replied, forcing herself to stand. Her muscles protested, but she managed to get to her feet. “Where are we?”

Lucian shook his head. “I don’t know. One minute we were in the Council chamber, and then... this.” He gestured to the void around them.

Selene turned in a slow circle, scanning their surroundings. The darkness seemed to stretch on forever, broken only by faint flickers of light far in the distance. It was like they had been cast into some sort of abyss, suspended between worlds.

Galen appeared next, his massive wolf form emerging from the shadows with a low growl. His amber eyes glowed with barely-contained fury, and his fur bristled with tension. He padded up to Selene, nudging her leg as if to reassure himself that she was still there.

“I don’t like this,” Galen muttered, his voice gruff. “Feels wrong. Like we’re not supposed to be here.”

Selene nodded in agreement. The air was thick with magic—dark, twisted magic that made her skin crawl. She could feel it pulsing around them, alive and hungry.

Dante, of course, was the last to join them, appearing out of the darkness with his usual lazy grin. He glanced around, his eyes gleaming with amusement. “Well, this is cozy, isn’t it? Nice change of scenery.”

“Do you ever take anything seriously?” Selene snapped, her frustration boiling over. “We’re trapped in some kind of nightmare dimension, and you’re cracking jokes?”

Dante raised an eyebrow. “What’s the point of freaking out? We’ll figure a way out of this. We always do.”

Selene shot him a glare but didn’t respond. He was right, of course—panicking wouldn’t help. The Cabal’s game was far from over, and whatever they were planning, Selene knew it wouldn’t end well for any of them.

Lucian stepped closer to her, his voice low. “We need to find a way out of here. Fast. I don’t trust this place.”

“You think?” Galen growled, his hackles raised. “The Cabal’s magic is all over this. They want something from us.”

Selene frowned, trying to make sense of the situation. “But what? What could they possibly gain by trapping us here?”

“They want to break you,” Dante said, his tone unusually serious. “They need you to submit, remember? To give in to their demands willingly.”

Her stomach twisted at the thought. The Cabal didn’t just want her blood or it powers—they wanted her will, her very soul. And this place, this dark, twisted realm, was designed to do just that. To wear her down, to make her desperate.

“Well, they’re going to be disappointed,” she said, squaring her shoulders. “I’m not giving them anything.”

Lucian’s gaze softened, and for a moment, Selene could see the concern beneath his steely exterior. He reached out, resting a hand on her shoulder.

A warmth spread through her chest at his action but she quickly pushed it aside. There was no time for distractions—not now. Not when everything was at stake.

“Do you hear that?” Galen suddenly asked, his ears twitching. He turned his head sharply, his eyes narrowing as he scanned the darkness.

Selene strained her ears, and after a moment, she heard it too—a low, rhythmic sound, like the beating of a distant drum. It grew louder with each passing second, echoing through the abyss.

“What the hell is that?” Dante muttered, his grin faltering for the first time.

Lucian’s expression darkened. “It’s coming closer.”

The ground beneath their feet trembled, and Selene’s heart leapt into her throat. The darkness around them seemed to shift and writhe, like a living thing, closing in on them.

“We need to move,” Lucian said, grabbing her arm. “Now.”

They ran. Selene’s feet pounded against the invisible ground, her breath coming in short, sharp gasps. The sound of the drumbeats grew louder, more insistent, and with it came a deep, guttural roar that sent chills down her spine.

Whatever was coming for them, it wasn’t human.

Galen ran ahead of them, his wolf form moving with fluid grace, while Dante and Lucian flanked her, their expressions tense. Selene pushed herself to keep up, her mind racing. They couldn’t outrun this thing forever—she needed to think of a way out. There had to be a way to break the Cabal’s magic, to free them from this nightmare.

But before she could think of a plan, the ground suddenly gave way beneath her. She screamed as she tumbled through the darkness, her arms flailing as she tried to grab onto something—anything—to stop her fall.

“Selene!” Lucian’s voice echoed above her, but it was too late.

She hit the ground hard, pain exploding through her body as the air was knocked from her lungs. For a moment, all she could do was lie there, gasping for breath, her vision swimming with stars.

But then she heard it—the low growl, the sound of heavy footsteps approaching.

Her blood ran cold.

Slowly, painfully, Selene pushed herself up, her heart racing as she turned to face whatever was coming for her. The darkness parted, and she saw it—a massive, hulking creature, its body twisted and deformed, with glowing red eyes that burned with malevolent intent.

It was unlike anything she’d ever seen. Part demon, part beast, with jagged claws and teeth that gleamed in the faint light. It let out a low, guttural snarl, its breath hot and rancid as it stepped toward her.

Selene’s heart pounded in her chest. She had no weapon, no way to defend herself. But she wasn’t about to go down without a fight.

The creature lunged at her, its claws slashing through the air. Selene rolled to the side just in time, her muscles screaming in protest as she scrambled to her feet. She had to stay on the move, had to outsmart it.

But the creature was fast—too fast. It lunged again, and this time, its claws grazed her arm, leaving a burning trail of pain in their wake.

Selene bit back a scream, her vision blurring as she stumbled backward. She needed to get away, to put some distance between her and the creature. But it was relentless, its glowing eyes locked on her as it stalked closer, ready to strike again.

*Think, Selene. Think.*

She glanced around, searching for anything she could use to her advantage. And then she saw it—a faint shimmer in the darkness, like a crack. It was small, barely noticeable, but it was her only chance.

Selene took a deep breath, steeling herself. She had to time this perfectly. If she missed, if she hesitated for even a second, the creature would tear her apart.

The creature lunged again, and this time, Selene didn’t move. She stood her ground, her eyes locked on the shimmering crack in the darkness. And just as the creature’s claws were about to connect, she dove forward, throwing herself toward the crack with all the strength she could muster.

For a moment, everything went silent. The darkness seemed to swirl around her, pulling her in, and then—
