Chapter 10

It had been a few days since Selene had arrived in the vampire realm, and though everything still felt foreign, she was beginning to adjust. The servants were polite, the palace was grand, and the quiet nights held a peacefulness she hadn’t experienced in a long time.

She stood before the grand mirror in her chambers, brushing out her hair as the morning sun cast soft rays through the tall windows. She’d grown accustomed to the luxury, but every time she looked at her reflection, she was reminded that she wasn’t just here to hide away in this world of opulence, She had a duty.

A soft knock at the door broke her thoughts.

"Come in," Selene called.

The door creaked open, revealing a young servant girl, her head slightly bowed as she entered. "My lady, Prince Lucian is awaiting you in the courtyard for your training session."

Selene’s heart quickened at the mention of his name. Training with Lucian had been intense from the start. Though they hadn’t started to explore her vampire abilities yet, each session pushed her physical limits, and she knew it was only a matter of time before they began to explore the magic within her.

“Thank you. I’ll be right out,” Selene replied, setting down the brush.

The servant nodded and quietly left the room.

Selene took a deep breath as she slipped on her training clothes—comfortable yet durable garments designed for combat. The lightweight material allowed her freedom of movement, and she appreciated the practicality of it. Her heart pounded a little harder with anticipation. Though she was getting used to the rigorous sessions with Lucian, each day brought new challenges, and she never knew what to expect.

The palace halls were quiet as she passed, the faint sound of her footsteps the only noise in the stillness. Eventually, she stepped out into the open air of the courtyard, where Lucian waited. His tall, imposing figure was immediately recognizable, even with his back turned to her as he surveyed the grounds.

“Good morning,” Selene greeted, trying to mask her nerves.

Lucian turned, his sharp, gray eyes locking onto hers. His expression was unreadable, as it often was, but there was a flicker of approval in his gaze.

“You’re early,” he noted with a slight smile.

“I thought I’d try to impress you for once,” she joked lightly, though her voice shook just a bit.

Lucian’s lips curved into a smirk. “You’ve been doing well. But we have much more to cover.”

He gestured to the open space in the center of the courtyard, where a variety of weapons were laid out, alongside training dummies and targets. Selene eyed them nervously, wondering what today’s session would be about.

“Today,” Lucian began, “we’re going to focus on refining your instincts. You’re quick, but you still rely too much on your human reflexes.”

Selene nodded. She knew what he meant. Her vampire side had been suppressed for so long that she hadn’t truly tapped into its potential. She was still learning how to harness the strength and speed that came naturally to Lucian and the others.

“Alright,” she said.

Lucian stepped closer, his gaze intense. “Remember, you’re not just a mortal. You have the blood of vampires in you, and that blood carries power. You just need to learn how to call on it.”

Selene swallowed hard. That was easier said than done.

“Ready?” Lucian asked, watching her closely.

Selene nodded, tightening her grip on the hilt of a sword she had selected from the array of weapons. She had always been decent with a blade, but against Lucian, she knew her skills were still lacking.

Without warning, Lucian lunged at her, his movements a blur. Selene barely had time to raise her sword in defense, their blades clashing with a sharp ring. The force of the impact sent vibrations up her arm, and she gritted her teeth, trying to hold her ground.

“Too slow,” Lucian remarked as he effortlessly parried her attack and spun around, striking again. Selene managed to dodge, but just barely.

“Focus, Selene. You’re thinking like a human. Stop holding back.”

She wanted to protest, to tell him that she wasn’t holding back, but the truth was, she was afraid. Afraid of what might happen if she let go. Afraid of losing control.

Lucian’s strikes came faster now, pushing her to her limits. Each time she blocked, it felt like her strength was failing, her human side struggling to keep up.

“Use your vampire instincts,” Lucian urged, his voice sharp but not unkind. “You’re stronger than this.”

Frustration bubbled inside her as she struggled to keep pace. Sweat dripped down her brow, her muscles burning with effort. She needed to do better—she needed to be better.

And then, something inside her snapped.

It was as if a switch had been flipped, a surge of energy rising from deep within her. Her vision sharpened, her senses heightening. The world around her slowed, and she could see Lucian’s movements before he even made them.

She lunged, her blade moving faster than before, and this time, Lucian didn’t dodge in time. Their swords clashed again, but now, the force came from her. Lucian staggered back slightly, his eyes widening in surprise.

“That’s it,” he said, his voice filled with approval. “Now you’re getting it.”

Selene felt the power coursing through her veins. It was exhilarating, but it was also dangerous. She could feel the vampire side of her pushing forward, urging her to let go completely.

But she couldn’t. Not yet.

She withdrew slightly, lowering her sword, her breath coming in quick, shallow gasps.

Lucian watched her closely. “You felt it, didn’t you?”

Selene nodded, still trying to steady her breathing. “Yes. But I don’t know how to control it.”

“You will,” Lucian assured her. “In time. But you can’t be afraid of your power, Selene. If you keep suppressing it, you’ll never be able to face what’s coming.”

She looked down at her hands, still trembling from the rush of energy. He was right, of course. She couldn’t afford to be afraid anymore.

“Let’s stop for today,” Lucian said, his tone softer now. “You’ve made progress, but you need rest.”

Selene nodded, grateful for the reprieve. She was exhausted, both physically and mentally.

As Selene and Lucian made their way back to the palace, they were interrupted by a male vampire who approached them swiftly. His expression was serious, his eyes filled with urgency.

"Prince Lucian," the vampire said in a low, formal tone. "You are needed immediately. There's a matter that requires your attention."

Lucian's eyes darkened, and he turned to Selene, his lips pressing into a thin line. "I have to take care of this. It won’t take long. Go ahead to the palace, and I’ll meet you later."

Selene nodded, though she couldn’t help but feel a little apprehensive as Lucian walked away with the vampire. Whatever it was, it seemed important. She turned and headed toward the garden, deciding to give herself some time to clear her head.

The palace garden was vast and serene, with blooming flowers and hedges arranged in patterns that reflected centuries of care. The air was cool, and the scent of roses and jasmine filled her senses. It was the perfect place to reflect on everything that had happened over the past few days.

As she walked into the garden, she noticed a familiar figure tending to the flowers. It was the servant girl who had attended to her since she’d arrived—a kind, quiet woman who had been nothing but polite. When the servant saw Selene, she straightened and bowed slightly.

“Lady Selene,” the servant greeted her with a warm smile. “It’s good to see you. How was your training session?”

Selene smiled back, though she still felt the exhaustion from the intense practice. “It was… intense. But I’m learning.”

The servant nodded, her eyes filled with admiration. “That’s wonderful to hear. Would you like some refreshments? After such training, a little sustenance might help you regain your strength.”

Selene thought for a moment, then nodded gratefully. “That would be nice. Thank you.”

The servant gave a small bow and hurried off to fetch the refreshments, leaving Selene alone in the peaceful garden. She wandered deeper into the greenery until she found a stone bench near the center of the garden. As she sat down, her gaze fell on a towering statue she hadn’t noticed before.

The statue stood at least twenty feet tall, carved from dark stone, and depicted a regal figure with an imposing stance. The vampire's eyes were sharp and commanding, his expression severe yet noble. His robes flowed around him as if captured in the wind, and a crown rested atop his head. There was something both awe-inspiring and intimidating about him.

When the servant returned with a silver tray holding a goblet of dark red wine and a platter of fruits, Selene couldn’t help but ask, “Who is that?” She gestured to the statue.

The servant followed her gaze, her expression softening. “That is the late vampire king— Prince Lucian’s father.”

Selene blinked in surprise, suddenly realizing just how little she knew about the vampire royal family.

“He looks… powerful,” Selene remarked, sipping the wine that the servant had handed her. “How long ago did he pass?”

The servant hesitated for a moment, choosing her words carefully. “Almost two decades ago, my lady. He ruled the vampire realm for nearly a thousand years.”

Selene’s eyes widened. “A thousand years?”

The servant nodded. “Yes. King Valerian was one of the longest-reigning vampire kings in history. He was known for his strength and wisdom, but also for his… mysterious nature. His passing was a great loss to the realm.”

Selene took another sip of the wine, letting the servant’s words sink in. Lucian’s father had ruled for a millennium, yet she hadn’t seen or heard of any other royal figures in the palace. The thought nagged at her, and finally, she asked, “Why hasn’t Lucian taken the throne, then? If his father is gone, shouldn’t he be the king by now?”

The servant’s expression darkened slightly, and she glanced around as if checking to see if anyone was listening. She lowered her voice when she spoke again. “It’s… complicated. Prince Lucian is the rightful heir, but before King Valerian passed, he revealed something that changed everything.”

Selene leaned in, curiosity piqued. “What do you mean?”

The servant looked hesitant, but then she sighed and continued, “On his deathbed, King Valerian confessed that Prince Lucian wasn’t his only child. He had another son, one that no one in the realm knew about. The king left the Prince with the responsibility of finding this child before he could take the throne.”

Selene’s heart skipped a beat. “Another child?”

“Yes,” the servant confirmed. “It shocked everyone. The king had always been secretive, but no one expected that he had fathered another child in secret. Prince Lucian has been searching for this sibling ever since. Until he finds him, he cannot claim the title of king.”

Selene stared at the statue, She had always sensed there was more to Lucian than he let on, but this? Another heir to the throne, hidden away somewhere in the world?.

“He’s been searching for nearly two decades?” Selene asked, her voice soft.

The servant nodded. “Yes, and it has not been easy. The identity of this other child is a mystery, and the king left no clues as to where He might be. But until He finds his sibling, the throne remains vacant.”

The servant stood quietly beside her, sensing that Selene had more questions but wisely staying silent.

“I didn’t know,” Selene whispered, her eyes fixed on the statue of the king. “Lucian never mentioned any of this.”

“Prince Lucian doesn’t speak of it often,” the servant replied softly. “He is a private man."

Selene nodded absently, still deep in thought. The more she learned about Lucian, the more she realized how little she truly understood him. Beneath his cold, composed exterior was a man fighting silent battles.

And suddenly, Selene felt even more connected to him, not just because of the prophecy, but because of the kind of responsibility they both carried.
