Night was chilly, air pungent with the scent of roses, yet behind it burned something like perfumed lies. Lady Selene wore the lilies in the garden, strawberry-blonde locks glinting in the dark as if she didn't care.

I wasn't wasting time on politeness. "You were near the tower this evening," I said, my voice slicing the quiet.
