Chapter 4

As the familiar sight of the entrance appeared, someone opened the passenger seat door. "Get down."

Christina had no desire to return to the Scenic Garden Manor, which to her was nothing more than a cage.

“I don’t want to,” she refused nonchalantly.

She didn't want to be Mrs. Hadley, much less live at Nathaniel's mercy.

Before she could react, Christina suddenly felt like she was being lifted. Her soft body trapped close to his muscular chest.

Christina's heart fluttered inexplicably when she felt the heat of his body penetrating her skin.

Nathaniel carried her into the house. The housekeeper, walking towards them, was completely shocked. She couldn't believe her eyes when she saw Nathaniel holding Christina, who had been kicked out of the house, in his arms.

After gently placing her on the sofa, he lifted her palm. The cut on her hand stimulated her nerves, causing pain in her arm.

“Bring me the first aid kit.”

The housekeeper, who was stunned, immediately hummed in recognition upon hearing Nathaniel's stern voice. She quickly grabbed the first aid kit and placed it on the table.

“Should I do this, Mr. Hadley?” How can I let Mr. Hadley deal with this kind of thing?

"He is well."

He wiped the back of Christina's hand with a cotton swab stained with aqueous iodine.

"There! That hurts!" She feared physical pain most. She wanted to retract her arm, but he grabbed her hand tightly.

"Be good. Be patient. He spoke tenderly, as if he were coaxing a child.

The stark contrast of a man, approximately six feet tall, suddenly speaking to her in such a gentle tone confused Christina.

The sunlight shining on his face made his serious facial expression appear extraordinarily serene.

After he finished bandaging the wound, he even blew lightly. His breath brushed her skin as if he were physically caressing her.

Christina removed her arm and looked away. "Thanks. Can I go home now?

“Do you suffer from amnesia? This is your home. Nathaniel seemed to have completely forgotten about the divorce, as if it had never happened.

Christina was anxious, but she knew that confronting him head-on wouldn't benefit her, so she thought communicating with him would be a better alternative. He never showed me any concern after so many years of marriage. Is he doing this because he changed his mind after we slept together that night?

“We are already divorced. What you are doing now is an illegal arrest!”

Nathaniel pinched her chin and forced her to look at him.

He curled his lips into a mischievous smile. “Who would have thought that you were also knowledgeable in legal matters?”

Cristina's face turned red. She could feel he was being sarcastic.

Nathaniel leaned very close to her, blowing on the tip of her nose. “In this case, will we still be considered a legally married couple if the divorce agreement is missing and we have not yet finalized the court documents?”

He's as cunning as a fox! He forced me to sign the divorce papers, but now he's the one going back on his words. How can a naive girl like me face a cunning demon like him?

The phone in his pocket rang at that moment, breaking the ambiguous atmosphere between them. Nathaniel answered the call.

Sebastian said: “Mr. Hadley, there is an emergency meeting with Hawen authorities that requires your personal attention. I took the car to the entrance of the house.”

Nathaniel mumbled a reply and hung up the call.

He released Christina and straightened his suit.

Sensing that he was about to leave, Christina began to draw up an escape plan in her mind.

When Nathaniel reached the door, he deliberately stopped and instructed, “Stay guard here and make sure she doesn’t go anywhere.”

“Understood,” the bodyguards replied in a booming voice.

Cristina felt her heart sink. Is he really locking me out?

She punched the air in frustration as she watched Nathaniel leave.

Meanwhile, inside the Hadley residence, two women were sitting on a luxurious imported sofa.

One of them was Julia, while the other was an elegant and well-dressed lady.

An ancient emerald bracelet was displayed on the table. Judging by the shine and color, one can easily tell that that accessory was made with the highest quality emerald. A bracelet like this was worth more than three million.

Xandra Sullivan made contact with several intermediaries before successfully purchasing the bracelet. She deliberately brought that item to pay tribute to her future mother-in-law.

Julia wore a friendly smile as she said, “You are so thoughtful, Xandra, unlike that shameful woman who only seemed capable of facing others with a frown. She acted like the Hadley family wronged her by making her marry my son!

She assessed Xandra with admiration. Xandra is the daughter of the owner of Sullivan Real Estate and the face of this city's socialites. Her career has prospered recently and she has successfully upgraded her status to an A-list celebrity. She is beautiful and has great etiquette. All of her excellent characteristics met the standards of the daughter-in-law I have in mind.

In contrast, Julia had been unhappy since Christina married Nathaniel three years ago.

Not only was Christina unpresentable, but Julia also feared that she would suffer embarrassment if others learned of Christina's existence.

If not for the ardent publication of the news by reporters in the past, causing the stock price to plummet drastically, Nathaniel would not have agreed to resolve the matter through marriage.

“Mrs. Hadley, you said Nathaniel got divorced? Xandra was excited to hear this news. Nathaniel finally divorced that hillbilly. I waited so many years for this moment.

Julia smiled meaningfully, patted Xandra's hand on the back, and whispered: “He not only got divorced, but also received treatment abroad and cured his illness. Nathaniel has no problem getting intimate with a woman now.”

"That is great!" Xandra's dwindling hope was rekindled.

When she learned of Nathaniel's allergy to women, she consoled herself by thinking that it would be a comfort to have his company, even if she could not copulate with him.

However, after hearing from Julia about Nathaniel's secret marriage, she gave up on being with him.

Now that her body had recovered and he was single again, Xandra couldn't help but feel like the gods were helping her.

Julia noticed the thoughts running through Xandra's mind, so she suggested, “Why don't I call Nathaniel home so we can have a meal together? It's been a long time since the two of you last met. You can take this opportunity to catch up and improve your relationship with him.”

"Clear!" Xandra smiled from ear to ear.

Her heart quickened as she imagined reuniting with the exceptionally handsome Nathaniel.

Julia was about to dial Nathaniel's number in front of Xandra when the phone rang. She realized that the incoming call was Scenic Garden Manor's landline number.

Although she didn't live there, she organized several spies to keep her updated.

That way, she could receive news about Christina's condition immediately. She figured that something urgent must have happened since she was receiving a call from Scenic Garden Manor's landline number.

Julia put the call on speakerphone. Subsequently, a panicked voice sounded. “Mrs. Hadley, Mr. Hadley brought Ms. Christina back to the Scenic Garden Manor. He even asked her to stay there and forbade her to go anywhere else. It looks like they don’t plan on getting divorced.”

"What? How dare that damn girl come back after signing the divorce papers? I’ll skin her alive!” Julia shouted furiously. She looked scary as her eyes turned red.

“Calm down, Mrs. Hadley. Being angry is bad for your health.” Xandra was nervous. Still, she had to maintain her elegant image in front of Julia.

Julia snorted before rushing off to Scenic Garden Manor with a party.

The housekeeper quickly opened the door when she noticed that Júlia had arrived.

Julia entered the room and shouted angrily: “Christina, you shameless woman! Why are you still here?”

Cristina, in a white dress, drew in the room. She held a brush with her slender fingers and was concentrating on painting. “Why am I here? You should ask your precious child this question.
