The sun has barely risen when I wake up, the soft light creeping through the curtains and casting long shadows across the room. I sit up, rubbing my eyes, trying to shake off the sleep that clings to me like a heavy blanket. The night feels like a blur, the weight of Ethan’s words echoing in my mind. “You’re mine now,” he had said.
I stand up, feeling the cold floor beneath my bare feet. The room is quiet, too quiet, and I can’t shake the feeling that something is about to happen. The house is still. Too still.
I step toward the door, my heart pounding as I grip the handle. But before I can open it, a voice stops me.
“Where do you think you’re going?”
I turn around quickly, my breath catching in my throat. It’s Ethan, standing in the doorway, his eyes dark and unreadable. He’s dressed in a black shirt and jeans, his posture casual, but there’s something about the way he stands that makes me feel small, insignificant.
“I… I was just going to get some fresh air,” I say, my voice shaking slightly.
He steps closer, his presence overwhelming. “You’re not going anywhere, Emily. Not without me.”
I try to keep my composure, but it’s hard when I can feel his eyes on me, like they’re searching for something inside me. I take a step back, but he doesn’t move. He’s blocking the door.
“Please,” I say, my voice barely a whisper. “I just need a moment. I need to think.”
His expression softens, but only for a moment. Then, just as quickly, it hardens again. “You don’t need to think, Emily. You just need to trust me.”
I open my mouth to protest, but he cuts me off. “You’re not going anywhere, and I’m not going to let you leave me.”
I want to scream. I want to shout at him to leave me alone. But instead, I swallow my fear and nod, my heart sinking in my chest. “Fine,” I say, barely able to get the words out.
Ethan studies me for a moment, then finally steps aside, allowing me to pass. But as I walk past him, I can feel his eyes on me, following me with a weight that makes my skin crawl. I can’t escape him. Not now. Not ever.
I make my way down the hallway, my footsteps echoing in the silence. Every door I pass feels like a barrier, like something keeping me trapped inside this house, inside this life I never asked for.
I reach the kitchen, where the faint smell of coffee fills the air. Liam is sitting at the table, sipping his coffee in silence. When he sees me, he offers a small smile, but it doesn’t reach his eyes.
“Good morning,” he says softly, his voice quiet.
I nod, but I can’t bring myself to respond. I feel the weight of Ethan’s presence looming over me, even though he’s not here. It’s like I can’t escape his control, his power. I don’t know how to fight it.
Liam sets his coffee down and looks at me, his expression serious. “You don’t have to go through this alone, Emily. You know that, right?”
I want to believe him. I want to trust him. But after everything that’s happened, I don’t know if I can.
“I don’t know what to do,” I admit, my voice trembling. “I don’t know how to make this stop.”
Liam leans back in his chair, his eyes thoughtful. “You can’t make it stop. Not now. But you can choose how to handle it. You can choose how you respond.”
“I don’t want this,” I say, my voice breaking. “I never asked for any of this. I just want to be free.”
Liam’s expression softens, but there’s a sadness in his eyes. “I know. But freedom isn’t something we have right now. Not until we figure this out.”
I feel a lump form in my throat, and I look away, trying to hide the tears that threaten to spill. I hate feeling like this. Like I’m trapped in a cage I can’t escape from.
Just then, the door slams open, and Ethan walks in, his face a mask of anger. “What are you two talking about?” he demands, his voice low and dangerous.
Liam doesn’t flinch. He simply meets Ethan’s gaze, his voice calm. “We were talking about Emily. About how she feels.”
Ethan’s eyes narrow, and he steps toward the table. “I don’t need your help, Liam,” he says coldly. “I’m handling this.”
Liam doesn’t back down. “She’s not a possession, Ethan. She’s a person. You can’t just control her.”
I feel the tension in the room thickening, like a storm waiting to break. I want to say something, to tell them both to stop, but I can’t find my voice. Instead, I sit there in silence, feeling small and helpless.
Ethan’s gaze flickers to me, and for a moment, his expression softens. But then it hardens again, and he turns back to Liam. “She’ll learn her place, Liam. Don’t worry about it.”
Liam doesn’t respond, but the look in his eyes speaks volumes. He’s not happy with the way things are going, but he’s also not in a position to change anything.
I stand up, feeling the weight of the situation pressing down on me. “I’m going outside,” I say, my voice quiet.
Before Ethan can stop me, I walk out the door, into the bright morning light. The air is cool, and the sun is still low in the sky. I take a deep breath, trying to calm my racing heart.
I walk down the path that leads to the garden, my footsteps soft on the grass. The flowers are in full bloom, their colors bright against the green of the trees. But none of it seems real. None of it can distract me from the feeling of being trapped.
I sit on a bench, my hands clenched tightly in my lap. I close my eyes, trying to clear my mind. But every time I try, all I can think about is Ethan’s words. “You’re mine now.”
I open my eyes again, staring at the ground. My mind races with thoughts, with questions I can’t answer. Why me? Why did this have to happen to me? What did I do to deserve this?
“Emily?”
I look up, startled. Standing in front of me is Lucas, his expression serious. “Can I sit with you?” he asks quietly.
I nod, though I don’t know what to say. Lucas sits down beside me, his presence surprisingly comforting.
For a moment, neither of us speaks. We just sit there, the silence stretching between us. Finally, Lucas breaks it.
“I know this is hard,” he says softly. “But you need to understand something. Ethan, Liam, and I… we’re not like other people. We’ve been raised to believe in things that most people wouldn’t understand. But that doesn’t mean we don’t care about you.”
I look at him, unsure of what to say. “Why me?” I ask. “Why did it have to be me?”
Lucas looks down, his eyes darkening. “Because you’re special, Emily. And because you’re the only one who can stop what’s coming.”
I frown, confused. “What’s coming? What do you mean?”
Lucas hesitates, his gaze flickering to the horizon. “There are things in this world that you don’t understand yet. Things that go beyond what you’ve been told. But trust me, Emily, you’re part of something much bigger than you realize.”
I don’t know what to say to that. I feel like I’m drowning in confusion, like everything around me is spinning out of control.
“Just… just tell me the truth,” I say, my voice breaking. “Tell me what’s going on.”
Lucas looks at me for a long moment, as if debating whether to tell me. Finally, he sighs.
“I can’t tell you everything. Not yet. But just know this: we’re all connected. And you’re the key to everything.”
I stare at him, my mind racing. What does that mean? How am I the key to anything?
Before I can ask more questions, I hear footsteps behind me. I turn to see Ethan standing there, his expression hard.
“Enough talking, Lucas,” he says coldly. “It’s time to go inside.”
Lucas stands up, his eyes meeting mine one last time before he walks away, leaving me with Ethan.
Ethan steps closer to me, his presence overwhelming. “You don’t need to talk to him anymore,” he says, his voice low. “You’re mine. And you’ll learn your place soon enough.”
I stand up, my hands trembling. “I don’t want this, Ethan,” I say, my voice filled with quiet desperation. “I just want to go home.”
Ethan’s eyes narrow, his jaw tightening. “This is your home now, Emily. And you’re not leaving.”
I swallow hard, my heart pounding in my chest. I feel like I’m suffocating, trapped in a life I never asked for.
As we walk back inside, I know one thing for sure: there’s no escape from this world. Not now. Not ever.
