The days blur together, each one feeling heavier than the last. I wake up, go through the motions, and try to keep my head down. But no matter how hard I try to ignore it, the tension between me and Ethan, Liam, and Lucas is thick in the air, suffocating me with every breath I take.
It’s the little things that make it unbearable—the way Ethan watches me like I’m something to be controlled, the way Liam tries to make me feel better with his quiet kindness, and the way Lucas always seems to know when I’m at my breaking point.
I wish I could escape. I wish I could run away from this life that’s been thrust upon me. But I know it’s not that simple. There’s no running. Not from them. Not from what’s coming.
It’s late afternoon when I find myself in the garden again, sitting on the same bench I sat on the other day. The flowers are still vibrant, but the air feels different now—heavy, like something is about to change. I don’t know why I came out here today, but I can’t stay inside. The walls of the house feel like they’re closing in on me, and I need to breathe.
I pull my knees up to my chest, wrapping my arms around them as I try to calm my racing thoughts. The sound of footsteps crunching on the gravel path catches my attention, and I look up to see Liam walking toward me. He’s holding a small basket in his hand, and he smiles when he sees me.
“Hey,” he says, sitting down next to me. “I thought you might be out here.”
I force a smile, though it feels strained. “I needed some air.”
Liam nods, setting the basket between us. “I brought you something. Thought you might like it.”
I look inside the basket and see a collection of freshly picked fruit—apples, pears, and some kind of berry I don’t recognize. My stomach growls at the sight, and I can’t help but reach for a pear.
“Thanks,” I say, my voice soft. “I haven’t eaten much today.”
Liam watches me for a moment, his expression unreadable. “I know things have been hard,” he says quietly. “But you don’t have to go through this alone, Emily.”
I look down at the pear in my hand, not sure how to respond. Part of me wants to tell him everything, to pour out all the fear and confusion I’m feeling, but another part of me holds back. I don’t want to burden him with my problems. I don’t want to drag him into the mess that is my life now.
“I’m trying to figure things out,” I say finally, my voice barely above a whisper.
Liam doesn’t say anything at first. He just sits there, watching me, and for a moment, I can almost forget about everything else. I can almost believe that things might be okay.
But then the silence is broken by the sound of someone approaching. I look up to see Ethan walking toward us, his eyes cold as always.
“What’s going on here?” he asks, his voice sharp.
Liam stands up, his body tense. “Nothing, Ethan. I was just talking to Emily.”
Ethan’s gaze flickers to me, then back to Liam. “I don’t want you getting too close to her, Liam,” he says, his voice low and dangerous. “She belongs to me.”
Liam doesn’t back down. “She’s not a possession, Ethan. You can’t just claim her like that.”
I feel the tension between them rise, thick and palpable. It’s like they’re two different forces, both trying to control me in their own way.
“Stop,” I say, my voice trembling. “Please. Just stop fighting.”
They both turn to look at me, and for a moment, I see something in their eyes—something like regret. But it’s gone as quickly as it came, replaced by the same coldness.
“Emily,” Ethan says, his tone softening. “I’m just trying to protect you. You don’t understand what’s at stake here.”
Liam steps forward, his eyes narrowing. “What’s at stake, Ethan? What’s really going on here?”
Ethan’s gaze hardens, and for a moment, I think he might lash out. But instead, he turns and walks away without saying another word. Liam watches him go, his jaw clenched tight.
I look at Liam, feeling the weight of the situation pressing down on me. “What’s going on, Liam?” I ask, my voice barely a whisper. “Why is Ethan acting like this? Why does he think he has the right to control me?”
Liam sighs, sitting back down on the bench beside me. “It’s not just Ethan, Emily. It’s all of us. We’re part of something bigger, something you don’t understand yet.”
I look at him, confused. “What do you mean? What’s going on?”
Liam looks at me, his eyes dark and serious. “There’s a reason you’re here, Emily. A reason you were brought into this world. And it’s not just because of what Ethan wants. It’s because of what’s coming. Something we all have to face together.”
I don’t know what to say to that. The weight of his words hangs in the air, suffocating me. What’s coming? What does that even mean?
Before I can ask more questions, I hear a voice behind me. “Liam, Emily.”
I turn around to see Lucas standing there, his expression unreadable. He looks between the two of us before speaking again. “It’s time.”
I stand up, my heart pounding in my chest. “Time for what?”
Lucas doesn’t answer right away. He just turns and starts walking back toward the house, his steps slow and deliberate. Liam looks at me, his expression softening for a moment before he follows after Lucas.
I follow them inside, my mind racing with questions. What’s going on? What’s happening now?
We enter the living room, and for the first time, I notice that it’s not just the three of them standing there. There are others—people I’ve never seen before. A man and a woman, both dressed in dark clothing, standing in the corner of the room. They’re watching me with cold eyes, their faces expressionless.
Ethan stands near the window, his arms crossed over his chest. He looks at me as I walk in, his gaze intense.
“What’s going on?” I ask, my voice shaky.
The man steps forward, his eyes cold as he looks me up and down. “You’re Emily, right?”
I nod, unsure of where this is going.
“We need to talk,” the woman says, her voice sharp. “It’s time for you to understand the truth.”
I feel my stomach drop at her words. “The truth about what?”
Ethan steps forward, his gaze never leaving me. “You’re part of something bigger than you realize, Emily. And now it’s time for you to know what that is.”
I look at Liam, but he doesn’t meet my eyes. Instead, he looks at Ethan, his expression unreadable.
The room falls silent, and for a moment, all I can hear is the pounding of my heart in my chest.
Ethan steps closer to me, his voice low. “You’re not just a girl, Emily. You’re the key. The key to everything.”
I swallow hard, trying to make sense of his words. “The key to what?”
The man and woman exchange a look, then turn their gaze back to me. “You’ll find out soon enough,” the man says. “But for now, you need to understand that your life is no longer your own.”
I feel the walls closing in around me again, and for the first time, I wonder if I’ll ever be free.
