The room feels colder now. Every word that’s been spoken has only made the silence between us feel thicker. The man and woman who had been standing in the corner have moved closer, and I can feel their eyes on me, watching me as though they’re waiting for something—waiting for me to understand something I’m not ready for.
I turn to Ethan, searching his face for any hint of what’s really going on. But his expression is unreadable, distant even. I want to ask him what he means by “the key,” but the words are stuck in my throat. Instead, I glance at Liam, hoping for some sort of reassurance. But his face is just as tense as Ethan’s.
“You’re not going to explain this, are you?” I ask, my voice quieter than I intended.
Ethan finally looks at me, his gaze intense, almost angry. “I can’t explain everything yet, Emily. You wouldn’t understand. Not until you’re ready.”
“Ready for what?” I snap, my frustration boiling over. “Ready for you to tell me that I’m part of some bigger plan that I don’t even know about? Ready for you to control me even more?”
Liam takes a step toward me, his hand outstretched as though he’s about to calm me down. “Emily, it’s not like that,” he says softly. “We’re trying to protect you. All of us. There’s more at stake than you realize.”
I shake my head, stepping back. “I don’t want your protection, Liam. I just want the truth. The whole truth.”
The man and woman exchange a look, and the woman steps forward, her voice cutting through the tension in the room. “The truth is that you’re part of something ancient, Emily. Something that goes beyond anything you’ve ever known.”
I stare at her, my mind racing to process her words. “Ancient? What are you talking about?”
The woman looks at Ethan, then back at me. “You’re part of a bloodline, a bloodline that has been hidden for centuries. Your family has been protecting something that the world isn’t ready for. And now that you’re here, everything is about to change.”
“Protecting what?” I ask, my heart pounding in my chest.
The woman’s gaze flickers to the man, and for a moment, I think they might not answer. But then the man speaks, his voice low and steady. “There’s a power that lies within you, Emily. A power that has been dormant for years. And it’s waking up now. It’s why you’re here. It’s why we found you.”
I feel my head spinning. “A power? I don’t have any power. I’m just… just a normal girl.”
Ethan steps forward, his expression softening just slightly. “You’re not just a normal girl, Emily. You never were. And you never will be.”
I open my mouth to protest, but no words come out. Instead, I look at Liam, my eyes searching for some sort of answer. He looks away, his jaw tight, and I know then that he’s been keeping something from me. Something that I need to know.
The woman watches me carefully. “It’s time you understand what you’re really a part of,” she says, her voice colder than before. “You’re the last of your bloodline. And your family’s duty was to protect a secret—one that could change everything. If the wrong people get their hands on it…”
She trails off, but the warning is clear. I feel the weight of her words pressing down on me. This isn’t just about me anymore. This is bigger than anything I could have imagined.
“Who’s after this secret?” I ask, my voice trembling. “Who wants it?”
The man steps forward, his face darkening. “There are others. Others who will stop at nothing to get what you have.”
I take a step back, my mind racing. “What do I have? What’s so important about me?”
“You’re the key, Emily,” Ethan says again, his voice low. “Your bloodline is the key to unlocking something that has been hidden for centuries. And now that you’re here, we have to protect you. We have to make sure you don’t fall into the wrong hands.”
I look at him, disbelief flooding my mind. “I don’t understand. How am I supposed to protect something I don’t even know about?”
Liam looks at me, his eyes filled with a mixture of guilt and concern. “You’re not alone in this, Emily. We’re here to help you. All of us. But you have to trust us.”
“Trust you?” I say, my voice rising. “How can I trust any of you when you’ve been keeping all of this from me?”
Ethan’s expression hardens, and for a moment, I think he might say something harsh. But instead, he takes a deep breath and looks at me with a calmness I don’t expect. “We had to protect you, Emily. We had to keep you safe until you were ready. Until you understood what was at stake.”
The woman steps forward again, her eyes narrowing. “And now that you understand, we need to move quickly. The others are closing in, and we can’t afford to wait any longer.”
“Who are the others?” I ask, my voice small.
The man’s gaze darkens. “You’ll meet them soon enough. But for now, we need to get you to a safe place. We can’t risk staying here any longer.”
A cold chill runs down my spine. “Safe place? What do you mean?”
Ethan looks at me, his expression serious. “We need to leave. Now.”
I look around the room, my mind racing. Everything has changed. My life has completely shifted in the last few minutes, and I don’t know what’s real anymore. All I wanted was to find some peace, but instead, I’m caught up in something I don’t understand.
“Where will we go?” I ask, my voice barely above a whisper.
Liam looks at me, his eyes filled with determination. “We’ll take you somewhere safe. Somewhere they can’t find you.”
I nod slowly, my heart heavy with uncertainty. “Okay,” I say, my voice trembling. “I’ll go. But I need answers. I need to know what’s going on.”
The woman nods, her face grim. “We’ll tell you everything. But for now, we need to move. It’s not safe here anymore.”
Ethan looks at me one last time before turning toward the door. “Let’s go.”
I take a deep breath, my heart pounding in my chest as I follow them out of the room. The world outside feels different now, like it’s holding its breath, waiting for something to happen. I don’t know what’s coming, but I know one thing for sure—nothing will ever be the same again.
