JASON HAD come out for a drink to clear his head from the doldrums he felt from being home alone. He'd attempted to compose a song and as usual, he'd failed.
He didn't know what was going on with him lately. He had thought his inspiration block was a result of the scandals he was in the midst of, but he had zero scandal to worry about anymore. So what the hell was the problem? Why did he feel like this was the silence before the storm?
Evelyn had been right about the people believing he wasn't dating a minor if he officially introduced an actual girlfriend. Now, most of the malicious comments were directed at Kelly Davis for not speaking up against the scandal.
Jason had called his only drinking buddy to have a drink with him and he'd gotten rejected. Again. For the third time this week.
Brad had given him the exact excuse that he had an UNEXPECTED emergency. Something was seriously going on with his friend and he wasn't letting him in on it.
Jason wasn't going to hang it over his head though. He was a family man. And that is one hell of a job.
Drinking all by himself he'd find the woman who was currently becoming the center of his attention sopping up a glass of... whatever that was. All by herself, deep in thoughts.
Jason figured Evelyn might have been just as bored as he was. He had asked her earlier back at home where she was heading to and she'd bluntly told him it was none of his business.
Watching her sitting there alone, he had wanted to do her a huge favor by gracing her with his company.
He stopped midway when some blonde dude walked up to her. At first, he thought he was just some random guy looking for lonely girls in bars to flirt with but Evelyn acted like she knew him.
Grinning from ear to ear, she looked at him so salaciously as if she had been dusted with an instant lust powder.
For some reason, he was bothered by the look in her eyes. THAT WAS RIDICULOUS.
He felt some strange tightening at the lining of his stomach.
The last straw was when placed his hands on hers. Caressing it. And she touched him back. What the hell?
His jaw tightened and without giving it much thought, he took rapid strides towards them.
Jason pulled out the chair close to hers and swung his hand around Evelyn's waist planting a kiss on her cheek. Got a kick out of the look on the other man's face.
"Jason? What are you doing here?" Evelyn muttered furiously.
She was really cute when she was angry. Her blue eyes glistened like bluebonnets in the rain.
He knew he was in trouble when he realized he was waxing poetry, even in his head.
Evelyn wriggled until he released her.
"Shouldn't I be asking you that? Why is my girlfriend out here drinking with someone else?" He responded all the while his gaze never leaving the other man.
The blonde guy chuckled smugly as if he knew something. "The name is Matt Johnson," he said. "And I don't think you should be talking to her with that tone. Considering the fact you're not her actual boyfriend."
Jason shot a murderous glare at Evelyn. "You told him?!" He snapped at the top of his voice, tugging at her arm. He looked around realizing that he was drawing attention to himself. He looked back at her and whispered huskily. "You weren't supposed to tell anyone. That was clearly written in the contract. What if he snitches to the press?"
Evelyn opened her mouth to speak but Matt cut in. "I won't. And that's only because Evy is involved in all this," he scowled down at Jason's hand. "Would you stop grabbing her that way? You're hurting her. You don't treat a woman like that. Especially one that's not your girlfriend."
"Well, last I checked, she's not your girlfriend either and this is between the both of us. So stay out of it."
"Can you stop?!" Evelyn flared up, glaring at him.
Why was she only mad at him? He started it.
Jason tugged at her arm again. "We're leaving. Now!"
"Let go! Now!" She swung her arm free. "You don't get to tell me what to do," then she looked at Matt apologetically, which made Jason's blood boil over. "I'm sorry."
Matt stood up and smile at her. "It's Ok, Evy. You can go with him. I'll call you later," He patted her shoulder and left.
Without sparing him a glance she stormed out through the exit and towards the parking lot. She must have guessed he came with his car.
Jason followed her from a little far behind. He was slightly scared. He didn't want to anger her any further.
He could almost envision cold fog enveloping her body.
She recognized his car and tugged at the handle violently. He quickly unlocked the car and got in with a blast.
Jason took a deep breath, he needed to be careful with his little frost queen.
HIS? Did he just refer to her as HIS?
He was doomed.
He got in and immediately she turned to him, flaring angry blue eyes at him. Instantly, the air temperature seemed to drop several degrees in the car and the air conditioner wasn't even on.
"What was that about?!" Evelyn sputtered.
Jason revved the engine and rode off. At high speed. "Are you kidding? Really? Weren't you the one on my neck two days ago on how we needed to be discreet, " he retorted, his brow furrowed. "And you took the liberty to have a drink with a guy in a bar with hundreds of people in it. What if there was a reporter there? Then I have to deal with another public scandal..." he waved his free hand. "...‘Superstar Jason Lyndon's girlfriend is caught cheating on him with some blonde guy after a week of making their relationship official. Was their relationship even real?’."
"Dionysus Bar is extremely private and you know it." She spoke more calmly this time. "You hook up with any girl you want and you're here going on about public scandal? What's your problem? Why are you acting like a jealous boyfriend?"
"I'm not! What's the deal with you two anyway? Who the hell is that dweeb?"
"He's not a dweeb! He's a doctor." Evelyn countered. Then smiled and added. "And remember when I told you there was only one guy I wanted to kiss me? Well, he is the one."
Jason pulled into his circular driveway and hit the brakes. Luckily, there weren't any reporters in his front entrance because he had been too immersed in his arguments with Evelyn that he had forgotten to go through their secret outlet. "So you told him everything? You must have a lot of faith in this guy."
"Yes, as a matter of fact, I do."
"Look I know you may think you like this guy, but let me tell you this woman. Men are the worst people to ever trust," he scowled at her. "If it ever gets out that we're in a fake relationship, my career will be over. And God helps me, if I go down, Evelyn. I'll pull every string to make sure your life is a living hell."
Speech was impossible and for what seemed like minutes, but was probably only seconds, they sat there in silence. Breathing in air which positively crackled with rage-electricity. Neither of them was willing to shift an inch.
Evelyn turned away and sucked in some air because apparently, she had stopped breathing. Then turned to face Jason.
This time the anger in her blue eyes was gone and replaced with something new, yet very familiar. Something he hasn't seen in a long time.
A look filled with hatred and repugnance. The same way his mother had looked at his father the night she disappeared.
And for a moment, his chest tightened. Painfully.
"You know, unlike you, there are lots of decent people out there. Trustworthy people. People that aren't MONSTERS. People that are actual human." Evelyn whispered gruffly in the coldest tone ever. "You might have deluded yourself with the idea that you're the perfect man and everyone out there likes you. And I know this is going to be a blow to your over-inflated ego but some people actually hate you, Jason Lyndon. Example: ME!"
With that, she stormed out of the car, slamming the car door behind her.
The words hit Jason like a slap across the face and he fell back in a reflex action which had him gasping for breath.
Was he becoming just like his father without realizing it?
He couldn't bring himself to leave the car immediately. He just couldn't.
For the first time in forever, Jason felt something shattering inside of him.
