I sat on the edge of the bed, staring down at my hands, trying to steady the tremble I didn’t want anyone to see. The room felt too quiet, too heavy, and when Vee finally sat next to me, I didn’t even have the strength to pretend I was fine. She looked at me with eyes full of concern, probably trying to ignore my previous comment as she cleared her throat and tried to speak to me again.
