An alarm bell rang, jolting them awake from their deep slumber. Before any of them could speak, Tina, with the advantage of her vampire speed, dashed into the bathroom, vanishing in a blur. The rest of the group, groggy but determined to get ready, decided to brush their teeth while they waited. Within a blink of an eye, Tina was already out, fresh and glowing. Dix sighed, feeling the weight of time on her shoulders as she went in next. After what seemed like an eternity, she finally finished. Eve, a little slower but just as efficient, went in last, and once she emerged, they all waited for her to change.
When she was ready, they made their way toward the school block, chatting amongst themselves.
"Hey, wait up!" Dax called out, hurrying to catch up with the girls. They paused and waited for him.
As they walked together, Eve's sharp eyes spotted someone.
"Hey, emeralds, wait up!" she shouted, waving as she dashed toward the figure ahead.
The others quickly fell in line, not wanting to get separated in the unfamiliar school. After a few moments, they finally caught up to Emerald.
"Good morning!" Eve greeted him cheerfully.
"Morning," Emerald replied, his tone warm, though his eyes never left the path ahead of him.
Tina, who had been quietly observing the exchange, raised an eyebrow. "Uh, hello?" she called out, drawing attention to the fact that she and the others were also present.
"Oh, my bad," Eve chuckled, turning to introduce everyone. "Emerald, this is Tina a vampire, Dix a witch, and Dax, also a witch. Tina and Dix are my roommates, and Dax and Dix are twins. And guys, meet Emerald, my cousin and a pyromancer a fire witch."
Emerald gave a nod to each of them, his eyes lingering on Dax for a moment longer than necessary.
"Nice to meet you all," he said, his voice smooth but with an edge that hinted at something more.
Dax's expression softened as he shook Emerald's hand. But as soon as their hands made contact, a brief yet noticeable tension hung in the air. They both froze for a moment, locked in an intense stare, sizing each other up.
Eve noticed the shift immediately and stepped in, clearing her throat. "Uh, Emerald, we're looking for our class," she said, hoping to defuse the growing discomfort.
Emerald seemed to snap out of it. "Oh, right. You'll want to head to the auditorium first, where they'll address you. It's straight ahead, then turn left. It's the last room."
"And after that?" Tina asked, her voice sharp with curiosity.
Emerald's gaze flickered to Dax for a brief second before he turned back to Tina. "After that, you'll get your class schedule. Nice meeting you guys again." He gave a polite nod and continued on his way, the tension still lingering in the air between him and Dax.
The group followed the directions he gave, soon arriving at a massive hall filled with students already taking their seats. The room was buzzing with excitement and chatter. The girls found empty seats, dropping their bags onto the floor and picking up only their notes.
As they settled in, Eve couldn't hide her excitement. "So, what do you all think so far? The school seems... massive."
"It's not bad," Tina said with a grin, her eyes gleaming. "I just hope we graduate together."
Dax, his thoughts still partially with Emerald, added, "Yeah, I think we will."
A tall woman walked onto the stage and approached the podium, her presence commanding attention. She looked in her late 40s, dressed in a sleek, professional outfit.
"Hello, great and powerful students," she began, her voice rich and confident. "We welcome you all to Aethoria High, the most prestigious school in Aethoria, where we teach young supernaturals to harness their powers where witches reach their full potential, shape shifters learn to shift with grace, and vampires become their best selves. Here, you'll learn self-control, defensive and offensive skills, and how to become the strongest version of yourselves."
A hush fell over the room as she continued, "I am Principal Wallaby, a fox shapeshifter, and it is my honor to guide you on this journey."
With a swift motion, she returned to her seat, and a man in his mid 30s stepped up to the stage. He had fiery red hair and piercing eyes.
"Hello, students," he greeted, his voice booming. "I'm Mr. Fabio, a phoenix. I'll be your coach, helping you unlock and sharpen your abilities. After class today, you'll pair up with a senior colleague for sparring. For now, take your class schedules as you leave this hall. And once again, welcome to Aethoria High, the school for the gifted."
As the teachers introduced themselves, the buzz of excitement grew. Soon, the students were dismissed, and they received their schedules. The first class was a history of the supernatural a joint class for all new students.
They followed the map to the classroom, conversing as they walked.
"So, what do you think?" Eve asked, her voice full of anticipation. "This place feels huge."
"It is," Tina responded. "But I can't wait to see how we all fit into it."
After a few more minutes of walking, they entered the classroom. Students from various factions were already there, engaged in their own conversations. The group made their way to an empty row, settling down.
"Hey, look!" Dix exclaimed, pointing to a seat.
As they sat down, the teacher, a stern looking man in his early 50s, stepped to the front of the class. "Hello, students. I am Mr. Sass, and I'll be teaching you history. To start, I want you to think about this: What does it mean to be a supernatural? Your assignment is to come up with your own definition and bring it to our next class."
The bell rang, signaling the end of the period, and the students filed out of the room.
"Can't wait for sparring," Tina said with a mischievous grin, her confidence filling the air.
The group made their way to the gym, where a large crowd of students had already gathered. The gym buzzed with nervous energy as everyone sized each other up.
Mr. Fabio stood at the center, calling for attention. "As you all know, today you will pick a sparring partner and train with them. This is where you begin to push your limits."
Eve felt a knot form in her stomach. She had never fought anyone before, and though she was confident in her abilities, the thought of sparring left her uneasy.
Tina, however, seemed excited. "I'm going to kick some ass!" she laughed, cracking her knuckles.
"Yeah, well, don't get too cocky," Dax muttered, his eyes scanning the room.
A flicker of movement caught Dax's eye Emerald, standing across the gym, his gaze locked on him. It was subtle, but Dax could feel the heat of the stare, the simmering tension between them. He couldn't shake the feeling that something was off.
As Mr. Fabio called for everyone to partner up, Dax found himself staring at Emerald. His pulse quickened, and for a moment, the world seemed to fade out, leaving only him and Emerald standing in the center of a storm that had yet to fully break.
"Dax," Tina whispered, her voice barely audible, "you okay?"
But Dax didn't answer. His focus was entirely on Emerald.
