A few days later, Ashley showed up at Gio’s office. Unlike her previous desperate self, this time Ashley arrived with full confidence. She was determined to personally deliver her divorce papers to Gio.
What Ashley never expected when she opened Gio’s office door was a pair of legs in black stockings with a mini office outfit crossed on the desk.
Like she was the boss!
Ashley had prepared herself to find disgusting things, so instead of crying like before, she went straight to sarcasm.
"So this is how assistants behave these days? Too much free time to spend lounging on the boss’s desk. No attitude. No manners. And no money either, to buy appropriate clothes?" Ashley snapped mercilessly.
Joy, the owner of the legs, quickly lowered her feet. She stood up from her previous position and put on a sheepish face. But Ashley wasn’t fooled by the pretense.
"Sorry, I didn’t see you come in, Mrs. Miller," Joy said, bowing her head.
Ashley remained silent, taking a moment to observe Joy’s appearance from top to bottom. Unlike Ashley’s preference for modest and elegant clothing, Joy dressed sexy and bold.
She wore a tight white shirt that outlined her perfect body silhouette and a tight black mini skirt. There was still no sign of a baby bump.
"Anyway, are you sure you’re wearing something under that short skirt? I’m afraid you’ll catch a cold, wearing so little in the fall," Ashley said calmly.
Before Joy could process Ashley’s words, she had already thrown the black lace underwear at Joy’s face. This time, Joy’s eyes widened. She couldn’t hide her shocked and puzzled expression.
Ashley scoffed. "Stop pretending. I know everything."
And just like that, Joy sneered. The polite demeanor she had shown earlier vanished, replaced by her true face. She looked at Ashley with a mocking gaze.
"I can’t believe you’re not disgusted carrying that thing around. I even purposely didn’t wash it so Gio could smell my scent whenever he missed me," Joy said shamelessly.
Ashley shuddered. Money really couldn’t buy class, and that’s exactly what Joy was proving. Although she didn’t understand why Gio was attracted to a woman lower than herself, Ashley held firmly to the principle that she wasn’t the one at fault.
She was the victim, and a victim didn’t always have to look pitiful. At least, Ashley wanted to show her late baby that she was a proud mother.
"Where’s Gio? I don’t have time to waste with someone as insignificant as you," Ashley said curtly.
A flash of anger appeared in Joy’s eyes. An idea quickly crossed her mind as she glanced at the clock, then she quickly walked to block Ashley’s path as she was about to leave the room.
Ashley, who initially intended to ask Gio’s secretary outside, had to stop. Her eyebrows furrowed in annoyance.
"Aren’t you waiting for Gio? He’ll be back soon, why not wait here?" Joy said with a mysterious grin. She kept advancing, forcing Ashley to step back.
Ashley, already uncomfortable, tried to push Joy aside. "Move, tramp! Don’t block my way!" Ashley snapped, lightly shoving Joy’s shoulder.
Joy shifted to the side, throwing herself a bit too far and falling to the floor. At the same moment, Gio suddenly appeared, his eyes widening at the obviously staged scene.
Gio was as surprised as Ashley, but he overreacted when he heard Joy's moan as she held her stomach.
“Forgive me, Mrs. Miller. I know I was wrong, I didn’t mean to do that!” Joy cried pathetically.
Ashley’s mouth fell open, unable to believe Joy was staging a cheap drama. But what she couldn’t believe even more was that Gio fell for it!
Gio rushed to Joy, helping her up and sitting her on the sofa. A barrage of worried, affectionate questions rained down on Joy.
Ashley watched the scene with longing. It felt strange because she used to be the one Gio cared for and pampered. And now, in less than a week, Ashley had to accept the reality that her place was replaced.
“What did you do to Joy? What if she’s hurt!” Gio shouted at Ashley after making sure Joy was okay.
Ashley glared at Gio, a cynical snort answering his question. Gio grew impatient. He had purposely stayed away for the past few days to make Ashley realize her mistakes. But he never thought Ashley would come to the office and attack Joy while he was away!
Gio’s large hands then grabbed Ashley’s arms tightly. “Answer me when I’m talking to you! Why did you hurt Joy? She’s done nothing wrong, why take out your anger on her?”
Gio’s grip hurt Ashley, but she refused to appear weak and endured the pain. “Then who’s at fault? You? Or me? Oh, right. In your eyes now, I’m a sinner, an evil woman who’s jealous of other women.
But I didn’t do anything to her. She blocked my way, and when I moved her, she threw herself to the ground!” Ashley defended herself.
Even though she knew it was useless, Ashley still chose to tell the truth. She believed that someday she would make Gio regret it the most when the truth spoke for itself.
“Do you expect me to believe that crap?” Gio whispered, his eyes red. Ashley shuddered, for a moment she no longer recognized the man before her. She struggled to break free, and looked at Joy and Gio in turn.
“I know you're afraid of hurting the baby in Joy’s belly. I know you value that child more than our relationship over the past four years of marriage. I'm not that cruel, Gio!” Ashley shouted in frustration.
It felt suffocating to see Gio’s look of disbelief. It was like talking to a solid wall. How ironic that their years together didn’t make Gio capable of assessing Ashley objectively.
It was heartbreaking to be in such pain. Just one week and Ashley was already breaking. She took a deep breath, trying to steady herself and remember her purpose for coming here.
Ashley pulled the divorce papers from a brown envelope and threw them at Gio.
“Isn’t this what you want? Sign it, and we’re done!”
