Chapter 4

The Man Behind the Door

Aurora stood at the edge of the construction site, her heels pressed into loose gravel, the wind tossing strands of her hair across her face. The noise of machines rumbled in the distance steel groaning, metal clashing, voices barking instructions over the sound of progress.

She kept her eyes on the skeletal frame of the building rising from the ground. She had reviewed the plans a dozen times, run the numbers, adjusted timelines but seeing it in person always brought it closer to reality.

She turned to the project manager, gave a few quiet instructions, and walked toward the portable office building. Her steps were even, slow, and deliberate.

Today’s site walkthrough was scheduled. She knew Dominic would be there again.

She had prepared herself for it.

That morning, she dressed with more care than usual. Not because she wanted him to see her. But because she needed to see herself.

She wore her navy blazer, pressed slacks, low heels, and a thin silver necklace Liam had made in craft class. The beads were mismatched, but she wore them anyway. Her armor, made of love.

She entered the office and found it half full. Architects, city liaisons, planners.

Dominic had not yet arrived.

She took her seat near the far end of the table.

The meeting began. People flipped through pages and compared timelines. The budget was mentioned. Delays, risks, and environmental permits. She gave her input when asked.

Then the door opened.

He stepped in, carrying nothing but a tablet and a black coffee cup. He offered polite greetings to the room, scanning for a seat.

His eyes landed on her.

No flicker of surprise.

No recognition.

Just the same controlled expression.

He sat beside the lead architect, across from Aurora.

She kept her eyes on the spreadsheet in front of her.

He asked a question about energy design. She responded with a clear answer.w Their voices filled the room one after the other, always professional, never overlapping.

He looked at her again as she explained a budget line.

She did not look back.

The meeting ended without any mistakes, any emotion, any hint of the past.

Aurora closed her folder, stood, and nodded to the team. She stepped outside and breathed in the fresh air.

Behind her, the door opened.

Footsteps followed.

He called her name.

Not the one he used to know.

He said Aurora.

She stopped walking.

She turned to face him.

He asked if she had a moment.

She said she did.

They stood apart. The wind shifted slightly. Noise from the site filled the space between them.

He asked if they had met before.

She held his gaze and said no.

He studied her face a little longer.

She said many people found her face familiar.

He nodded slowly, accepting the answer, but not satisfied.

Then he thanked her for her work on the project.

She nodded once more and turned away.

But her hands were no longer steady.
