Chapter 2

Isabella Kingsley, stepped out of the cab and stood before the towering glass building that once held all her memories. It had been three years since she last saw this place, but today, she was ready. She’d managed to hide herself in Stella’s home all this while, undergoing facial surgeries and taking care of her son. Now, she was finally ready to tell her father the truth about that night. And what Olivia and Thomas tried to do.

With her sleek new look, no one would recognize the woman she once was. Still, her heart thudded with nerves as she walked through the familiar lobby, glancing at faces she once knew but who now barely spared her a glance. They all saw a stranger as no one recognized her in her new face.

She headed straight for her father’s office, her steps steady as she had gone there thousands of times. So she was surprised when she noticed the nameplate on the door… Thomas Kingsley: Chief Executive Officer.

Confused, she turned to the secretary seated nearby. “Excuse me,” Isabelle said, forcing calm into her voice. “I’m looking for Mr. Robert Kingsley"

The secretary’s expression softened with pity. “Oh, I’m sorry to tell you this but Mr. Robert Kingsley passed away over a year ago. It was a sudden heart attack, very tragic"

Isabelle’s voice faltered. “Oh, I didn’t…" her breathing became really difficult but she tried to compose herself.

The secretary gave a small nod, sympathy clear in her eyes. “It’s been hard for everyone, especially his family"

Isabelle was still trying to digest the news when she saw Olivia making a call. She was visible through the glass wall. Isabelle froze, locking eyes with her for a long moment. Fear gripped her and she wondered if Olivia recognized her but Olivia only glanced once, then returned to her phone call. The secretary cleared her throat softly. “Is there anything else I can help you with?”

Isabelle swallowed the lump in her throat. “No, thank you" She was about leaving when a familiar voice called

"Hey miss, Is everything alright here?" Isabelle turned and saw Olivia folding her hands across her chest and waiting for an answer.

Isabelle noticed how perfect she looked…the woman who tried to kill her.

The secretary quickly stepped aside. "This lady was asking about Mr. Kingsley. She said she was a friend of his daughter"

Olivia's eyes landed on Isabelle and narrowed ever so slightly. Then, slowly, a frown formed. "Why are you asking about Mr. Kingsley are you working for the police or what”

“Ma’am I am sure you are mistaken” The secretary tried to defend Isabelle. But before she could say another word, Olivia said angrily. “no one asked your opinion Lesy. If you still want your Job, I suggest you stay out of my businesses”

“I am sorry” Lesy gave a weak bow and hurried back to her desk.

“You can leave now, the person you seek no longer exist” Olivia said placing her phone back to her ear and walking away

Isabella rushed into the elevator, she slammed the close button with frantic fingers. The moment the doors slid shut, her composure shattered.

She leaned her back against the wall, slid down to the floor, and buried her face in her hands. She began to sob. Her shoulders shook violently as she wept, not just for her father, but for the years lost and for the truth she never got to tell him. For everything she had lost, including the very name on the door she used to run to as a little girl.

“He’s gone,” she whispered to no one. “He’s really gone"

The grief felt unbearable. She clutched her stomach, gasping through the flood of emotion. Her chest ached as if her heart were breaking in slow pieces.

With trembling hands, she fumbled for her phone and found Stella’s number. The second the call connected, her voice cracked

“Stella…” Her throat tightened. “Stella, he’s gone. My father is dead"

There was silence for a beat, and then Stella’s soft, urgent voice came through the line.

“Isabelle? Slow down okay breathe…tell me what happened?”

Isabella wiped her cheeks, but the tears kept coming. “I got here then I walked into the building. Everything was the same, but somewhat different. I got to his floor and the door said Thomas Kingsley. Not my father"

Stella exhaled gently. “What did they say?”

“They said he died from a heart attack. It was over a year ago. I didn’t even know and I came all this way. I built this new life, all of it so I could tell him the truth but …” She broke off again. “I was too late"

“Oh, Isabelle…” Stella whispered. “I’m so sorry"

“That’s not all,” Isabelle continued, her voice shaking. “I saw Olivia In the office. I thought for sure she would know it was me"

“But she didn’t?” Stella asked softly.

“No,” Isabelle said “She didn’t even flinch. She came up later and she was such a bitch to me"

“Okay well I don’t know what you were expecting from someone who tried to kill you though,” Stella chuckled. “That also means your cover’s solid. You’re still in control. Just breathe for me, alright? In and out"

Isabelle tried to follow Stella’s instructions carefully. “Mommy?” The tiny voice on the other end of the line stopped her.

“Mommy…are you okay? Why are you crying?”

Isabelle gasped softly as fresh tears ran down her cheeks. “I’m okay, baby,” she whispered. “Mommy’s okay"

Stella’s voice followed gently. “He heard you crying. You don’t want him to worry, do you?”

Isabelle pressed the phone tighter to her ear. “No I don’t want him to cry too"

“Then breathe,” Stella said. “We’ll get through this together"

“Yes” Isabelle got up from the floor and wiped her tears. “I sure hope Olivia and Thomas did nothing to my father though… if they hurt him”

Stella chuckled “and what if they had huh?”

“Then I'll need to start learning how to get away with murder” Isabelle replied.

Stella just laughed “I have to go now, see you soon. Don’t forget your appointment with Dr. Beckett”

“Sure,” Isabelle hung up. She wiped her tears and walked out of the building with confidence.

She was on her way to meet with her therapist, Dr. Beckett who has been really helpful since her surgery.

Just when she was about to cross the street, a black expensive looking car pulled up in front of her, almost knocking her down.
