Dawn broke like a challenge across Logan’s wing.

The whistle came first shrill, uncompromising followed by the clack of wood against wood as he

tested two training staff on the patio outside my room. My ribs still ached from yesterday’s drills;

my calves felt dipped in lead. I considered pretending to sleep, then remembered he’d simply

take the sheets, and my dignity, with one impatient tug.
