I stood in front of my closet, staring at my clothes with a mix of anticipation and anxiety. What does one wear to dinner with their billionaire boss who might also be interested in them personally? After trying on and discarding what felt like a dozen outfits, I finally settled on a sleek black dress that walked the line between professional and alluring.
As I put the finishing touches on my makeup, my phone buzzed. A text from Timothy:
"Car will pick you up at 7. Looking forward to our evening."
I took a deep breath, trying to calm my nerves. This was just dinner, I told myself. A celebration of landing the Zephyr account. Nothing more.
But even as I thought it, I knew I was lying to myself.
The car arrived precisely at 7 PM - a sleek black sedan with tinted windows. The driver, a stern-faced man in a suit, opened the door for me.
"Good evening, Ms. Shap," he said. "Mr. Ross is waiting for you at the restaurant."
The drive was short but felt like an eternity. When we pulled up to one of the most exclusive restaurants in the city, my nerves kicked into overdrive.
Timothy was waiting for me at the entrance, looking devastatingly handsome in a tailored suit. His eyes lit up when he saw me, a smile spreading across his face.
"Bella," he said, taking my hand and bringing it to his lips for a gentle kiss. "You look stunning."
I felt a blush creep up my cheeks. "Thank you. You clean up pretty well yourself."
He chuckled, offering me his arm. "Shall we?"
The maître d' led us to a private booth tucked away in a quiet corner of the restaurant. As we sat down, I couldn't help but feel a little overwhelmed by the opulence surrounding us.
"I hope this isn't too much," Timothy said, noticing my expression. "I wanted tonight to be special."
I smiled, trying to relax. "It's beautiful. Thank you."
As we perused the menus, I decided to dive right in. "So, Timothy. Is this a business dinner or a personal one?"
He looked up, his blue eyes twinkling with amusement. "Can't it be both? We're celebrating your professional achievement, after all."
"True," I conceded. "But I can't help feeling there's more to it than that."
Timothy set down his menu, his expression turning serious. "You're right. There is more. Bella, I've been impressed by you from the moment we met. Your dedication, your intelligence, your passion for your work... it's rare to find someone like you."
My heart was pounding so loudly I was sure he could hear it. "I... thank you. But I hope you know that my team deserves just as much credit for landing Zephyr."
He nodded. "Of course. And they'll be rewarded accordingly. But tonight, I want to focus on you. On us."
Before I could respond, the waiter arrived to take our orders. As Timothy ordered a bottle of ridiculously expensive wine, I tried to gather my thoughts.
Once we were alone again, I leaned forward. "Timothy, I need to be clear about something. If this... whatever this is between us... is going to go anywhere, it can't affect my position at Apex. I won't be seen as someone who slept her way to the top."
For a moment, Timothy looked taken aback. Then he burst out laughing.
"Oh, Bella," he said, shaking his head. "That's the last thing I want. Your success at Apex is entirely your own. If anything, I'm worried about people thinking I'm using my position to pursue you."
I felt a weight lift off my shoulders. "So we're on the same page then?"
He reached across the table, taking my hand in his. "Completely. Whatever happens between us personally, it won't affect our professional relationship. You have my word."
As we ate, our conversation flowed easily from work to our personal lives. I found myself opening up to Timothy in a way I hadn't with anyone in a long time.
"So, what made you want to become a marketing director?" he asked as we finished our main course.
I took a sip of wine, considering the question. "Honestly? I love the challenge of it. Finding new ways to connect with people, to tell a company's story. It's like solving a puzzle, but the pieces are always changing."
Timothy nodded, his eyes never leaving mine. "I can see that passion when you work. It's infectious."
"What about you?" I asked. "How does someone become a billionaire investor?"
He chuckled. "It's not as glamorous as it sounds. A lot of long nights, hard decisions, and yes, some luck. But like you, I love the challenge. Taking a struggling company and turning it around, unlocking its potential... there's nothing quite like it."
As he spoke, I could see the same passion in his eyes that I felt when talking about my work. It was... attractive, to say the least.
"Is that what you see in Apex?" I asked softly. "Potential?"
Timothy's expression softened. "Absolutely. Especially in people like you, Bella. You're the future of Apex."
The intensity of his gaze made my breath catch. For a moment, I thought he might lean across the table and kiss me. Part of me hoped he would.
But the moment passed, and Timothy cleared his throat. "Speaking of Apex, I have a proposition for you."
I raised an eyebrow. "Oh?"
"I want you to lead our expansion into the Asian market," he said. "It's a huge opportunity for Apex, and after seeing how you handled the Zephyr account, I know you're the right person for the job."
I blinked, stunned. "Timothy, that's... I'm honored. But it's a massive undertaking. Are you sure?"
He nodded firmly. "Absolutely. You'll have full autonomy to build your team, develop the strategy, everything. Of course, it would mean relocating to our new office in Singapore for at least a year..."
My mind was reeling. This was the kind of opportunity I'd dreamed of, but never thought I'd get so soon in my career. But Singapore? For a year?
"I... I don't know what to say," I stammered. "It's an incredible opportunity, but it's also a huge change. Can I have some time to think about it?"
Timothy smiled. "Of course. Take all the time you need. But Bella, I truly believe you're the best person for this job. I wouldn't offer it to you if I didn't think you could handle it."
As we finished our dessert, my head was spinning with thoughts of Singapore, new challenges, and the man sitting across from me.
When the car dropped me off at home later that night, Timothy walked me to my door.
"Thank you for a wonderful evening," I said, suddenly feeling shy.
He smiled, reaching out to tuck a strand of hair behind my ear. "The pleasure was all mine."
For a moment, we just stood there, the air between us charged with unspoken tension. Then, slowly, Timothy leaned in.
The kiss was soft, gentle, but filled with promise. When we pulled apart, I felt breathless.
"Goodnight, Bella," Timothy murmured. "Sweet dreams."
As I watched him walk back to the car, I touched my lips, still tingling from the kiss. What had I gotten myself into?
The next morning, I woke up to a flurry of texts from Maya.
"OMG, how was dinner??? Did he kiss you??? TELL ME EVERYTHING!"
I laughed, typing back a quick "I'll tell you at work. It's... complicated."
As I got ready for the day, my mind kept drifting between the kiss with Timothy and his job offer. Both thrilled and terrified me in equal measure.
When I arrived at the office, Maya practically pounced on me the moment I stepped off the elevator.
"Spill!" she demanded, dragging me to the break room. "I want every detail!"
I glanced around, making sure we were alone. "Okay, okay. Yes, we had dinner. Yes, he kissed me. And... he offered me a huge promotion."
Maya's eyes widened. "Holy crap, Bella! That's amazing! What's the promotion?"
I took a deep breath. "He wants me to lead our expansion into the Asian market. From Singapore."
For a moment, Maya just stared at me. Then she let out a squeal so loud I was sure the whole office heard.
"Bella! That's incredible! Oh my god, you're going to take it, right? Please tell me you're going to take it!"
I shushed her, laughing despite my nervousness. "I don't know yet. It's a big decision. I'd be moving to Singapore for at least a year..."
Maya's excitement dimmed slightly. "Oh. Wow. That is big." She squeezed my arm. "But Bella, this is the kind of opportunity people kill for. You can't pass it up."
I nodded, sighing. "I know. It's just... everything's happening so fast. With work, with Timothy..."
"Speaking of," Maya said, wiggling her eyebrows. "How was the kiss?"
I felt myself blushing. "It was... nice. Really nice."
"Nice?" Maya scoffed. "Girl, you kissed a billionaire. I'm gonna need more than 'nice'!"
Before I could respond, we were interrupted by a knock on the break room door. We turned to see Timothy standing there, an amused expression on his face.
"Good morning, ladies," he said. "I hope I'm not interrupting anything important."
Maya turned bright red. "Mr. Ross! We were just, uh..."
"Discussing the Zephyr account," I cut in smoothly. "Maya was just leaving to finalize some details."
Maya shot me a look that clearly said "we're not done talking about this" before scurrying out of the break room.
Once we were alone, Timothy's professional demeanor softened. "I hope I didn't overhear anything too scandalous," he said with a wink.
I felt my cheeks heat up. "Nothing that would make the company gossip mill, I assure you."
He chuckled, stepping closer. "I wanted to check in. See how you're feeling about last night. About everything."
I took a deep breath. "Honestly? I'm a little overwhelmed. The dinner was lovely, and the kiss..." I trailed off, suddenly very aware of how close he was standing.
Timothy's eyes darkened slightly. "Yes?"
I cleared my throat. "It was nice. But the job offer... Timothy, it's a huge decision. Moving to Singapore, taking on such a massive project..."
He nodded, his expression turning serious. "I know it's a lot to take in. But Bella, I wouldn't have offered you this if I didn't think you were ready for it. You have an incredible talent, and I want to see you use it to its full potential."
I looked up at him, searching his face for any sign of doubt. "And what about... us? Whatever this is between us?"
Timothy reached out, gently taking my hand in his. "That's entirely up to you. If you take the job, if you don't... my feelings for you won't change. But I want you to make this decision based on what's best for your career, not on me."
I nodded slowly, feeling a mix of relief and disappointment. Part of me had hoped he'd beg me to stay, to choose him over the job. But I knew he was right. This had to be my decision, based on what I wanted for my future.
"Thank you," I said softly. "I promise I'll let you know my decision soon."
He smiled, bringing my hand to his lips for a soft kiss. "Take all the time you need. I'll be here, whatever you decide."
As Timothy left the break room, I leaned against the counter, my mind racing. How was I supposed to choose between the career opportunity of a lifetime and the possibility of a relationship with an incredible man?
The rest of the day passed in a blur. I tried to focus on work, but my thoughts kept drifting to Singapore, to Timothy, to the kiss we'd shared.
As I was packing up to leave, my phone buzzed. A text from Dad:
"Hey kiddo. Haven't heard from you in a while. Everything okay?"
Guilt washed over me. With everything going on, I'd completely forgotten about Dad. Again.
I quickly typed back: "Sorry, things have been crazy at work. Dinner this weekend?"
His response came almost immediately: "Sounds great. Looking forward to it."
As I left the office, I felt like I was being pulled in a dozen different directions. The job in Singapore. Timothy. My team at Apex. My slowly rekindling relationship with Dad.
How was I supposed to make a decision that would affect so many aspects of my life?
That night, as I lay in bed staring at the ceiling, I realized something. No matter what I chose, things were going to change. The safe, comfortable life I'd built for myself was already shifting beneath my feet.
The question was: was I brave enough to embrace that change?
As I drifted off to sleep, one thought kept circling in my mind:
Whatever I decided, the Bella Shap who woke up tomorrow would be different from the one who'd walked into Apex just a week ago.
And maybe, just maybe, that wasn't such a bad thing after all.
