Chapter 4

As we entered the courtroom, I saw Dominic Reynolds already seated in the gallery. Our eyes met, and I felt that same jolt of... something. Attraction? Animosity? I wasn't sure anymore.

We took our seats, the tension in the room palpable. I could hear Sarah's shaky breathing beside me, see Jake fidgeting nervously a few rows back.

The bailiff's voice rang out. "All rise for the Honorable Judge Harriet Blackwood."

As the judge took her seat, she surveyed the room, her expression unreadable. "Be seated. Has the jury reached a verdict?"

The foreman stood, a sealed envelope in his hand. "We have, Your Honor."

My heart was pounding so loud I was sure everyone could hear it. This was it. Months of work, of late nights and sacrificed weekends, all coming down to this moment.

The judge opened the envelope, her eyes scanning the paper inside. She looked up, her gaze sweeping the courtroom.

"In the case of Greenway vs. MegaCorp, on the charge of willful environmental pollution, the jury finds the defendant... guilty."

The courtroom erupted. I heard Sarah's sob of relief beside me, felt her arms wrap around me in a tight hug. But I couldn't celebrate yet. There was more.

"On the charge of knowingly endangering public health, the jury finds the defendant... guilty."

Another cheer went up. I allowed myself a small smile. We'd done it. We'd actually done it.

"Order in the court," the judge called, banging her gavel. As the room quieted, she continued. "The court thanks the jury for their service. Sentencing will be scheduled for three weeks from today. Court is adjourned."

As people began to file out, I turned to Sarah, who was weeping openly now. "We did it, Sarah. We won."

She nodded, unable to speak through her tears. I hugged her tightly, feeling a wave of emotion wash over me. This was why I became a lawyer. This moment, right here.

"Ms. Torres."

I looked up to see Dominic Reynolds standing before me. His expression was unreadable, but I thought I detected a hint of admiration in his eyes.

"Mr. Reynolds," I said, straightening up. "Come to congratulate the winning team?"

A small smile played at the corners of his mouth. "Something like that. I must say, you fought an impressive battle. MegaCorp never stood a chance."

I raised an eyebrow. "Is that disappointment I hear? Given your company's relationship with MegaCorp, I'd think you'd be less thrilled about their loss."

Dominic's smile didn't waver. "Business is business, Ms. Torres. But I can appreciate skill when I see it. In fact, I was hoping we might continue our conversation from earlier. Perhaps over dinner?"

I blinked, taken aback by the sudden invitation. Part of me was intrigued, curious to learn more about this enigmatic man and his connection to the case. But another part remembered the conversation I'd overheard, the mention of Project Phoenix.

"I appreciate the offer, Mr. Reynolds," I said carefully. "But I make it a policy not to socialize with opposing counsel. Or their business partners."

Dominic chuckled. "A wise policy. But I assure you, Ms. Torres, my interest is purely... professional. I have a proposition for you. One I think you'll find intriguing."

Before I could respond, Jake appeared at my elbow. "Ms. Torres? Sorry to interrupt, but there are some reporters outside asking for a statement."

I nodded, grateful for the interruption. "Thank you, Jake. I'll be right there." I turned back to Dominic. "If you'll excuse me, Mr. Reynolds. Duty calls."

Dominic inclined his head. "Of course. But don't think this lets you off the hook, Ms. Torres. I can be very persistent when I want something."

As I walked away, I could feel his eyes on me. What did he want? And more importantly, what was he hiding?

Outside, a sea of microphones and cameras greeted me. I took a deep breath, composing myself. This was the easy part.

"Ms. Torres! How does it feel to win against a corporate giant like MegaCorp?"

"What do you say to critics who claim this verdict will hurt the local economy?"

"Is it true that you turned down a substantial settlement offer from MegaCorp?"

I held up a hand, silencing the barrage of questions. "Today's verdict is a victory not just for Sarah Greenway, but for every citizen who believes that corporations should be held accountable for their actions. MegaCorp chose profits over people, and the jury saw through their lies. This verdict sends a clear message: no company is too big to face justice."

As I fielded more questions, I caught sight of Dominic Reynolds leaving the courthouse. He paused at the top of the steps, his eyes finding mine in the crowd. He gave me a small nod, a gesture that felt both like a challenge and a promise.

I wrapped up the press conference quickly after that, my mind already racing ahead. There were so many questions left unanswered. What was Project Phoenix? How deep did the corruption go? And what role did Dominic Reynolds play in all of this?

As I walked back to my office, I made a decision. I wasn't going to let this go. MegaCorp's conviction was just the beginning. There was a bigger story here, and I was going to uncover it, no matter the cost.

My phone buzzed with a text. It was from an unknown number.

"Congratulations on your win, Ms. Torres. Our dinner invitation still stands. There's much to discuss. - D.R."

I stared at the message, a mix of emotions swirling inside me. Curiosity, suspicion, and something else I couldn't quite name. One thing was clear: Dominic Reynolds was going to be a factor I couldn't ignore.

As I entered my office building, I saw Jake waiting for me in the lobby. His face was alight with excitement.

"Ms. Torres! That was amazing! The way you handled those reporters... and the verdict! I can't believe we won!"

I couldn't help but smile at his enthusiasm. "We've won the battle, Jake. But I have a feeling the war is just beginning."

He nodded, suddenly serious. "Is this about what we overheard? About Project Phoenix?"

"Partly," I admitted. "There's something bigger going on here, Jake. And we're going to figure out what it is."

Jake's eyes widened. "We are? I mean, you still want my help?"

I put a hand on his shoulder. "I do. But I need to know you're all in, Jake. This could get complicated, maybe even dangerous. Are you sure you want to be involved?"

He straightened up, a determined look on his face. "I'm sure, Ms. Torres. Whatever you need, I'm here."

I nodded, feeling a mix of pride and worry. "Alright then. Let's get to work. We've got a mystery to solve."

As we headed up to my office, I felt a surge of adrenaline. The case might be over, but the real challenge was just beginning. Somewhere out there was the truth about MegaCorp, about Reynolds Enterprises, about Project Phoenix. And I was going to find it.
