Chapter 6

As if on cue, my phone buzzed. It was a text from Jake: "Black SUV outside. Two men watching the restaurant. Look suspicious."

I stood up abruptly. "I have to go."

Dominic rose as well, concern etched on his face. "Mia? What's wrong?"

I hesitated, then decided to trust my instincts. "There are men outside. Watching the restaurant. Your people?"

His expression darkened. "No. We need to leave. Now."

He grabbed my hand, leading me towards the kitchen. "There's a back exit. Come on."

As we hurried through the bustling kitchen, dodging surprised chefs and waiters, I fired off a quick text to Jake: "Following Dominic out back exit. Track my phone."

We burst out into a dimly lit alley. Dominic looked both ways, then pulled me to the left. "My car's this way."

"Wait," I said, digging in my heels. "How do I know I can trust you? How do I know this isn't part of some plan?"

Dominic turned to me, his eyes blazing with an intensity that took my breath away. "Mia, I swear to you, I am not your enemy here. But right now, we need to move. Please."

Something in his voice, in the urgent grip of his hand, made me nod. "Okay. Lead the way."

We ran down the alley, emerging onto a side street where a sleek black Audi was parked. Dominic unlocked it with a click of his key fob and opened the passenger door for me.

As I slid in, I saw movement out of the corner of my eye. A black SUV was turning into the street.

"Dominic," I said urgently. "They're here."

He swore under his breath, jumping into the driver's seat. The engine roared to life, and we peeled away from the curb just as the SUV accelerated towards us.

"Hold on," Dominic growled, shifting gears.

We sped through the city streets, the SUV in hot pursuit. My heart was pounding, adrenaline coursing through my veins. This was insane. What had I gotten myself into?

Dominic drove like a man possessed, weaving through traffic with a skill that spoke of practice. But the SUV was gaining on us.

"There's a gun in the glove compartment," Dominic said, his voice tense. "Do you know how to use one?"

I stared at him in shock. "A gun? What the hell, Dominic? Who are these people?"

He took a sharp turn, tires squealing. "People who will do anything to protect Project Phoenix. The gun, Mia. Can you use it?"

I swallowed hard, then reached for the glove compartment. Inside was a sleek handgun. I picked it up, feeling its weight. "Yes," I said quietly. "I can use it."

Dominic glanced at me, surprise and something like admiration in his eyes. "Full of surprises, aren't you, Ms. Torres?"

I managed a wry smile. "You have no idea."

Just then, the back window exploded in a shower of glass. I ducked instinctively, hearing the sharp crack of gunfire.

"They're shooting at us!" I yelled.

"I noticed," Dominic said grimly. He swerved hard, taking us down a narrow alley. "Mia, I need you to trust me. Can you do that?"

I looked at him, this man I barely knew, who had turned my world upside down in a matter of hours. Every instinct I had as a lawyer, as a rational human being, was screaming at me to say no.

But there was something else, something I couldn't quite name, that made me nod. "Yes. I trust you."

He flashed me a quick, fierce grin. "Good. Then get ready. We're going to lose them, but it's going to get rough."

With that, he floored the accelerator. We burst out of the alley onto a main street, narrowly missing a taxi. Horns blared as Dominic wove through traffic at breakneck speed.

I clutched the gun tightly, my eyes darting between the side mirror and the road ahead. The SUV was still behind us, but falling back.

Suddenly, Dominic made a hard right, tires screeching. We were heading towards the river. "Mia," he said, his voice deadly serious. "No matter what happens next, remember - I'm on your side."

Before I could ask what he meant, I saw where we were headed. The road ended at the river, a concrete barrier the only thing between us and the water.

"Dominic," I said, my voice rising in panic. "Dominic, what are you doing?"

He reached over and squeezed my hand. "Trust me."

And then we were airborne. The car smashed through the barrier and sailed over the river. For a moment, everything was silent, suspended. I saw the city lights reflected in the dark water rushing up to meet us.

Then we hit the water with a massive splash. The impact knocked the breath out of me. Water started pouring in immediately.

"Mia!" Dominic's voice cut through my shock. "The windows! We need to open them before the electricity shorts out!"

I fumbled for the window control, my fingers feeling numb. The window lowered agonizingly slowly as the car began to sink.

"Now," Dominic said, "take a deep breath and swim out. I'll be right behind you."

I nodded, gulping in air. Then I pushed myself out of the window and into the frigid river water.

The current was strong, pulling at me as I fought my way to the surface. My lungs were burning by the time I broke through, gasping for air.

"Dominic?" I called out, panic rising in my throat. Where was he?

Then I heard splashing behind me, and Dominic surfaced, coughing and sputtering. "Mia! Are you okay?"

"I'm fine," I managed, teeth chattering. "What now?"

He pointed towards the shore. "We swim. Come on, I'll help you."

Together, we made our way to the riverbank, the cold water sapping our strength. By the time we dragged ourselves onto solid ground, I was shaking uncontrollably.

Dominic pulled me into his arms, his body warm despite our soaked clothes. "It's okay," he murmured. "We're safe. You're safe."

I looked up at him, this enigmatic man who had just turned my world upside down. "Dominic," I said, my voice shaky, "I think it's time you told me exactly what's going on. What is Project Phoenix? And why are people trying to kill us?"

He sighed, his arms tightening around me. "You're right. You deserve the truth. But not here. We need to get somewhere safe first."

As if on cue, headlights appeared on the road above us. We tensed, ready to run again. But then I heard a familiar voice calling out.

"Mia? Mia, are you down there?"

Relief washed over me. "Jake," I called back. "We're here!"

As Jake scrambled down the embankment towards us, I turned back to Dominic. "Okay," I said, my voice stronger now. "Let's get somewhere safe. And then you're going to tell me everything."

Dominic nodded, his expression grave. "Everything," he agreed. "But Mia... once you know, there's no going back. Are you sure you're ready for that?"

I thought about Sarah, about the cryptic warning she'd received. I thought about the gun in Dominic's glove compartment, about the men who had chased us through the city. And I thought about the way Dominic had looked at me, with respect and admiration and something more.

"I'm sure," I said firmly. "Whatever this is, whatever Project Phoenix is... I want in."

Dominic's eyes searched mine for a long moment. Then he nodded, a small smile playing at his lips. "Alright then, Ms. Torres. Welcome to the resistance."

As Jake reached us, fussing and asking a million questions, I couldn't shake the feeling that I had just crossed a line. My orderly life as a lawyer, fighting for justice in the courtroom, seemed like a distant memory.
