Chapter 1

The cold wind howled through the barren trees, carrying with it the scent of impending snow. Johanna pulled her threadbare cloak tighter around her shoulders as she trudged up the winding path to her family's modest cabin. Her arms ached from the weight of the firewood she'd gathered, but she knew every stick was precious. Winter was coming, and her pack was ill-prepared.

As she approached the cabin, raised voices made her pause. Her stepfather, Gregor, was arguing with someone inside. Johanna's heart raced. Visitors were rare in their remote corner of the forest, and rarely brought good news.

"You can't be serious!" her mother's voice cried out. "She's just a girl!"

"It's already done," Gregor growled back. "The agreement has been made."

Johanna's blood ran cold. What agreement? What had Gregor done now?

Taking a deep breath, she pushed open the door. The conversation abruptly halted as three pairs of eyes turned to her. Her mother, Elara, looked stricken, tears glistening in her eyes. Gregor's face was set in grim lines, a muscle twitching in his jaw. But it was the third person who drew Johanna's attention – a tall, imposing man with jet-black hair and piercing blue eyes. He radiated power and authority, his very presence seeming to fill the small cabin.

"Ah, here she is," Gregor said, his voice gruff. "Johanna, come in. There's someone you need to meet."

Johanna stepped inside, her arms still full of firewood. She looked questioningly at her mother, who seemed unable to meet her gaze.

"This is Tony, Beta to Alpha King Damian of the Northern Territories," Gregor announced.

The man – Tony – inclined his head slightly. "A pleasure to meet you, Johanna," he said, his voice smooth and cultured. "I trust your stepfather has informed you of the arrangement?"

Johanna's confusion deepened. "I... I'm afraid not," she replied, looking between Tony and Gregor. "What arrangement?"

An uncomfortable silence fell over the room. Finally, Gregor cleared his throat. "Johanna, you're to be married. To Alpha King Damian."

The firewood clattered to the floor as Johanna's arms went slack with shock. "Married?" she whispered. "But... I don't understand. I've never even met him."

Tony stepped forward, his expression a careful mask of neutrality. "Alpha King Damian requires a bride of strong werewolf lineage. Your stepfather offered you as a suitable candidate, and the Alpha King has accepted."

Johanna's mind reeled. She looked to her mother, hoping for some sign that this was all a terrible joke. But Elara's tear-streaked face told her everything she needed to know.

"You sold me?" Johanna asked, her voice barely above a whisper as she turned to Gregor. "How could you?"

Gregor's face hardened. "I did what I had to do for this pack. The Alpha King's bride price will see us through the winter and then some. You should be grateful for the opportunity."

"Grateful?" Johanna repeated, anger rising to replace her shock. "To be sold like cattle to a man I've never met?"

"Watch your tongue, girl," Gregor snarled. "This isn't up for discussion. You'll do your duty to this pack, or so help me–"

"That's quite enough," Tony interjected smoothly, stepping between Johanna and her stepfather. He turned to Johanna, his expression softening slightly. "I understand this is a shock, Johanna. But I assure you, as the Alpha King's bride, you'll want for nothing. You'll have comfort, security, and status beyond anything you've known."

Johanna shook her head, struggling to process it all. "And what does the Alpha King want in return?" she asked, dreading the answer.

Tony hesitated for a moment before responding. "An heir," he said simply. "Once you've given the Alpha King a son, you will have fulfilled your obligation. You'll be free to stay or go as you choose, with a generous settlement to ensure your comfort for life."

A hollow laugh escaped Johanna's lips. "So I'm to be a broodmare, then? How... generous of His Majesty."

"Johanna!" Elara gasped, speaking for the first time since her daughter's arrival. "You mustn't speak that way about the Alpha King. He... he could be a good husband to you."

"A good husband?" Johanna repeated incredulously. "Mother, I've heard the stories about Alpha King Damian. They call him the Cruel One, the Merciless. How could you agree to this?"

Elara's eyes filled with fresh tears. "We had no choice, my love. The pack is starving. This winter will be the death of us all if we don't–"

"If we don't sell me to a monster," Johanna finished bitterly.

Tony's eyes flashed dangerously. "I'd advise against using such language to describe your future husband and king," he said, his voice low. "Alpha Damian may be... stern, but he is fair. And he will provide for you beyond your wildest dreams."

Johanna turned away, her mind racing. She thought of the stories she'd heard whispered around campfires – tales of Alpha King Damian's legendary cruelty, of packs crushed beneath his iron fist. How could she possibly marry such a man?

But then she looked at her mother's gaunt face, at the holes in her own worn dress. She thought of the empty bellies in the pack, of the pups who might not survive another harsh winter. And she knew, with a sinking heart, that she had no real choice at all.

"When do we leave?" she asked quietly, not turning around.

She heard Tony shift behind her. "Now," he replied. "The Alpha King is eager to meet his bride."

Johanna nodded, still facing away from the others as she fought back tears. "May I at least pack a few things?"

"Of course," Tony said. "But be quick. We have a long journey ahead."

As Johanna moved to her small corner of the cabin to gather her meager possessions, she heard Tony speaking quietly to Gregor.

"The first half of the bride price, as agreed," Tony murmured. There was the clink of coins changing hands.

"And the rest?" Gregor asked gruffly.

"You'll receive it once the marriage is consummated and there's proof of pregnancy," Tony replied. "As per the contract you signed."

Johanna's hands clenched around the small bag she was packing. So that was it – her body, her future, sold and paid for like a prized mare. She took a shuddering breath, forcing down the sob that threatened to escape.

A gentle hand on her shoulder made her turn. Her mother stood there, eyes brimming with unshed tears. Without a word, Elara pulled her daughter into a fierce embrace.

"I'm so sorry, my darling," she whispered. "I wish there was another way."

Johanna clung to her mother, allowing herself one moment of weakness before she'd have to face her new reality. "I know, Mama," she murmured back. "I'll be alright. I'll make you proud."

Elara pulled back, cupping Johanna's face in her hands. "You already do, every day," she said fiercely. "And listen to me – no matter what happens, no matter what they say, you are not property. You are strong, and brave, and worthy of love. Don't you ever forget that."

Johanna nodded, committing her mother's words to memory. She had a feeling she'd need that reminder in the days to come.

All too soon, it was time to go. Johanna stood in the doorway of the only home she'd ever known, looking back at her mother's tear-stained face and Gregor's stony expression.

"Take care of them," she said to Gregor, her voice stronger than she felt. "That's what all this is for, isn't it? So make sure it's worth it."

Gregor nodded stiffly, something like regret flashing in his eyes for just a moment before it was gone.

Tony placed a hand on Johanna's back, gently but firmly guiding her out the door. "Come," he said. "Your new life awaits."

As they made their way down the path, Johanna heard her mother's anguished howl pierce the night. The mournful sound was quickly joined by others – her packmates, saying goodbye to one of their own. Johanna tilted her head back and added her voice to the chorus, a final farewell to everything she'd ever known.

They reached a clearing where a sleek black carriage waited, pulled by four massive horses that pawed at the ground impatiently. Tony opened the door, gesturing for Johanna to enter.

As she placed her foot on the step, a thought struck her. She turned to Tony, her eyes wide. "Wait," she said. "You said we're leaving now, but... the moon. It's full tonight. How will we travel?"

For the first time, a ghost of a smile touched Tony's lips. "Ah," he said. "I suppose you wouldn't know. The Alpha King's bloodline is... unique. They have full control over their shifts, no matter the phase of the moon. And those in his inner circle, like myself, have been granted a measure of that control through his power."

Johanna's eyebrows rose in surprise. She'd never heard of such a thing. Just how powerful was this Alpha she was meant to marry?

As if reading her thoughts, Tony's expression grew serious once more. "You'd do well to remember that, Johanna," he said quietly. "Alpha King Damian is not a man to be trifled with. He can be a generous master to those who please him, but his wrath is terrible to behold. For your own sake, I hope you'll be wise enough to stay on his good side."

With that ominous warning ringing in her ears, Johanna climbed into the carriage. As Tony shut the door behind her, she caught one last glimpse of her family's cabin, small and fragile in the Distance. Then the carriage lurched forward, and her old life disappeared into the darkness.

Johanna leaned back against the plush velvet seat, her mind whirling. In the span of an hour, her entire world had been turned upside down. She was leaving behind everything she'd ever known, bound for a marriage to a man she'd never met – a man known for his cruelty and power.

As the carriage rolled through the night, carrying her toward an uncertain future, Johanna made a silent vow to herself. No matter what trials lay ahead, no matter how cruel or demanding her new husband might be, she would survive. She would find a way to thrive in this new world, to make something of the life that had been forced upon her.

And maybe, just maybe, she would find a way to turn this nightmare into something resembling a dream.

Little did Johanna know, as the carriage bore her swiftly through the moonlit forest, that her arrival at the Alpha King's court would set in motion a chain of events that would shake the very foundations of the werewolf world. For sometimes, the most unexpected unions can lead to the most extraordinary destinies.

As the first light of dawn began to paint the sky, Johanna caught her first glimpse of her new home – a massive fortress perched atop a craggy mountain, its dark stone towers seeming to pierce the very heavens. A shiver ran down her spine as the carriage approached the imposing gates.

Whatever lay beyond those walls, Johanna knew her life would never be the same. For better or worse, her journey as the Alpha King's bride was about to begin.
