Chapter 2: The Shadow Outside
Veronica’s Point of View
I woke up with Jason’s heartbeat under my cheek, steady and strong. His arm was around me, warm and heavy, like he didn’t want to let go. My couch creaked as I shifted, my eyes catching the faint glow of streetlights through the window. Something felt wrong. My skin prickled, like when you know someone’s watching you. I sat up, slow and careful, so I wouldn’t wake him. His face was calm, his dark hair messy across his forehead. He looked so… human. But he wasn’t. Not completely. I’d fed on him twice, and he was still breathing. That wasn’t normal.
I stood, my boots quiet on the floor. The shadow I’d seen outside was gone, but my stomach twisted. Something was out there. Something bad. I moved to the window, peering through the glass. The street was empty, but the air felt heavy, like a storm was coming. I’d been a vampire for five hundred years. I knew when trouble was close.
“Veronica?” Jason’s voice was sleepy. He sat up, rubbing his eyes. The bandage on his neck was crooked, showing the red marks from my teeth. Guilt hit me like a punch. I wasn’t supposed to feel this way. I was a Supreme Vampire, queen of my kind. I didn’t care about humans. But Jason wasn’t just a human, and that scared me.
“Go back to sleep,” I said, keeping my voice soft. “It’s okay.”
He frowned, looking at the window. “What’s wrong? You’re acting strange.”
I forced a smile. “Nothing’s wrong. Just checking the street.”
He didn’t believe me. His green eyes narrowed, and he stood, tall and strong, even after I’d drained him. “You saw something,” he said, stepping closer. “Tell me.”
I wanted to lie, to keep him safe, but those eyes made it hard. “I don’t know,” I said. “Something was outside. It’s gone now.”
He grabbed his jacket from the couch, pulling out a wooden stake. My heart skipped. He was ready to fight me, or something else. “What was it?” he asked, his voice hard.
“I don’t know,” I said again, sharper this time. “But you need to stay here. It’s not safe.”
He laughed, but he wasn't happy. “Not safe? You’re the one biting me, Veronica. I’m not hiding while you go out there.”
I grabbed his arm, my fingers tight. “You don’t get it, Jason. If something’s after me, it’ll come for you too. You’re… connected to me now.”
His face changed, like he was trying to figure out what that meant. “Connected how?” he asked.
I didn’t answer. I couldn’t. The truth was, every time I fed on him, I felt him more.his heartbeat, his warmth, his strength. It was like a rope tying us together, and I didn’t know how to cut it. Or if I wanted to.
“Stay here,” I said, letting go of his arm. “I’ll check outside.”
He shook his head. “No way. I’m coming with you.”
I wanted to argue, but there was no time. The air felt heavier now, like something was closing in. I nodded, grabbing my leather jacket. “Stay close,” I said. “And don’t do anything stupid.”
We stepped outside, the night air cold against my skin. The street was quiet, too quiet. No cars, no people. Just the hum of a street light flickering above us. Jason held his stake tight, his eyes scanning the shadows. I could hear his heart pounding, but he didn’t look scared. He looked ready.
We walked down the sidewalk, my boots clicking, his sneakers soft. I sniffed the air, trying to catch a scent. There it was something old, like dirt and blood, but sharp, like metal. Vampire. Not one of mine. My fangs ached, ready to fight.
“Veronica,” Jason whispered, pointing to an alley across the street. Red eyes glowed in the dark, just like I’d seen before. My stomach dropped. This wasn’t a random vampire. This was someone strong, someone who wanted trouble.
“Stay behind me,” I said, stepping in front of him. The eyes moved closer, and a man stepped out. He was huge, taller than Jason, with a thick beard and cropped hair. His grin showed sharp fangs, and his eyes locked on me.
“Veronica Storm,” he said, his voice like gravel. “The queen herself. Thought you were hiding.”
I stood taller, my hands curling into fists. “Who are you?” I asked, keeping my voice steady.
He laughed, a mean sound. “Hilton Moyers. I’ve been looking for you. Time to take your crown.”
My heart raced, but I didn’t show it. Hilton was a First Vampire, one of the old ones. Strong, brutal, and dangerous. I’d heard of him. I heard he wanted to control all vampires. If he was here, it wasn’t just for me. He’d kill Jason to hurt me.
“Jason, run,” I said, not looking back.
“No,” Jason said, stepping beside me. He held his stake like he knew how to use it. Stupid, brave human.
Hilton’s eyes flicked to Jason, and his grin got wider. “What’s this? Your pet? Smells… different.”
“Leave him alone,” I growled, stepping forward. My fangs slid out, ready to tear into him. But Hilton was fast. He lunged, his claws aiming for my throat. I dodged, grabbing his arm and twisting it. He roared, swinging his other fist. It hit my shoulder, and pain shot through me. He was strong, too strong.
Jason shouted, charging at Hilton with his stake. Hilton laughed, knocking the stake away like it was a toy. He grabbed Jason by the throat, lifting him off the ground. Jason gasped, his feet kicking.
“No!” I screamed, tackling Hilton. We crashed to the ground, his claws scraping my arm. Blood dripped, but I didn’t care. I punched his face, my strength shaking the pavement. He growled, throwing me off. I hit a wall, my head ringing.
Jason was on his feet, grabbing his stake again. He moved fast, faster than he should’ve. He stabbed Hilton’s shoulder, and the vampire roared, dropping him. I got up, my vision blurry, and ran to Jason’s side.
“You okay?” I asked, my voice shaking.
He nodded, breathing hard. “Yeah. You?”
Before I could answer, Hilton charged again. I pushed Jason out of the way, taking the hit. Hilton’s claws dug into my side, and I screamed. Pain burned through me, but I grabbed his arm, twisting it until I heard a crack. He howled, stumbling back.
“Run!” I yelled at Jason. This time, he listened, sprinting down the alley. I faced Hilton, my blood dripping on the ground. “This isn’t over,” he spat, his red eyes glowing. Then he turned and vanished into the shadows.
I leaned against the wall, panting. My side hurt, but it was already healing. Supreme Vampires heal fast, but that fight scared me. Hilton wasn’t just strong, he knew about Jason. That meant trouble. Big trouble.
I found Jason a block away, hiding behind a dumpster. His face was pale, but his eyes were sharp. “What was that thing?” he asked, his voice low.
“A vampire,” I said. “A bad one. He’s after me… and now you.”
“Why me?” Jason asked, gripping his stake.
I looked away, my chest tight. “Because you’re with me,” I said. It wasn’t the whole truth, but I couldn’t tell him the rest. Not yet. “We need to leave. It’s not safe here.”
“Leave?” he said, his voice loud. “This is my home, Veronica! I’m not running because of your mess!”
I grabbed his shoulders, my eyes burning. “You don’t get it, Jason. He’ll kill you. You’re not just a human. There’s something… special about you. That’s why he wants you.”
He stared at me, his jaw tight. “Special how?”
I didn’t know how to explain it. His blood, his strength, the way he survived my bites, it wasn’t normal. But before I could say anything, a new sound cut through the night. A low growl, like a dog, but deeper and darker. It came from the shadows, and this time, it wasn’t Hilton.
Red eyes glowed again, but these were different. Bigger. Angrier. A shape moved, tall and muscular, with wings like a bat’s. My heart stopped. This wasn’t a vampire. This was something worse. And it was coming straight to us.
