Party Gone Wrong

"What are you doing, Ellen?" I could not believe the sight that greeted me as I walked into the house, pushing Blake with me.

But she could not hear me over the loud music and dancing friends. I stormed over to the speaker and turned it off. That got her attention then, and that of these people I did not know.

"Hey. You guys are home. Come join us." She beamed as though she was proud of herself at what she'd done. No, she was actually proud of what she'd done.

"Get out!" Came Blake's biting command.

Like I said, people knew Blake. And wheelchair or not, they were still intimidated by his wealth and status. Everyone grabbed whatever they had come in with and scurried out of the house while I stood in total disappointment observing Ellen who had the audacity to look as if she had been hurt and embarrassed.

"There! Are you happy now? They are all gone." She gave me the stink eye.

"Are you serious right now Ellen? Are you trying to be funny? Was this the plan?" I shot back at her.

"You said to plan a party." She retorted in her defense.

"You told her to plan a party in my house?" The cold accusation was quite unnerving.

I shot Ellen an angry look before turning to him. "No Blake. I told her to just do something small and private for the three of us. A welcoming party for you. Something to cheer you up. I never knew she would turn it into a festival." I glared at her as I said those words.

"What's the point of planning a party if you don't invite people?" She folded her arms angrily.

"This is not for people, Ellen. It's not for yourself. Maybe when it's all about you, do as you want but not when it's about your brother. Why would you even do this?!" I thought Ellen was going to be a nice, selfless person but she was proving me wrong without even trying.

She was behaving like some spoiled princess. Selfish and inconsiderate. How could she invite that many people into this house when she knew her brother's status in the society? And that he would probably not want anyone to see him like that.

"Take me inside now." He was really angry. It was not hard to notice it.

Giving Ellen one last disappointing stare, I went to wheel her brother into his room. Before the accident, we had never slept together in the same room before and it was a mutual agreement that sat well with us.

"I'm really sorry for that. Ellen just..."

"Don't you blame this one on Ellen." His expression was stony and his words were granite.

I frowned. "I..."

"Shut up! You asked her to plan a party, did you not?" His gaze bore an angry hole in my face.

"It was a little something meant to cheer you up. I did not ask her to invite everybody."

"So this is your plan, right?" He glared spitefully.

"What?" Confusion mixed with hurt. Was he not listening to me? Was he not comprehending anything I was saying?

"You invited people so they could see me and mock me. You are aware of my status in the society yet you planned a party for people to come, you selfish, wicked woman!" In his fit of anger, he punched the arm of his wheelchair.

The force of that punch caused me to jolt in fear. If that wheelchair was not very strong, I felt the punch would have broken the arm that had received the hit. But why would he call me selfish? I was not even the one throwing the party.

"How am I selfish, Blake? I have been with you in that hospital from the time you had this accident. And when you woke, I barely left your side except to get you whatever you requested. How you even call me wicked?" His insults hurt, tears lodged themselves in the back of my throat but I swallowed them.

"So I should bow and kiss your feet because you stayed by me in the hospital? Why? You didn't want to? Now I'm in this condition, you no longer see my value? Maybe you did not even marry me for your friend as intended. You wanted my wealth." He accused even hotly.

I gasped. Disbelief and hurt burned through my body. "How can you say that, Blake? I never wanted to marry you. You gave me an ultimatum. You left me no choice."

"But you had plenty of choice. You could have said no but you didn't. Maybe at first you did, but you came back and agreed!"

I could see he was ready to drag this out with me till the end and I was exhausted. The past week into hospital had been filled with less sleep and more worrying. It got worse when he woke up.

I was always on my feet going errands for things he did not end up using. I kept mute and let him win this one. I would attribute it to the fact that he was angry and frustrated over what had happened to him.

So swallowing my own hurt and needs, I moved to help him to the bed so he could get some rest. That would give me time to get some rest too.

"Do you want anything?" I asked him, folding his wheelchair and keeping it by his bedside within reach incase he had need for it.

But he just kept me mute.

"Blake, do you want..."

"Leave."

Frustration and anger, that was it. My needs and feelings were not important at this time. I adjusted the bedsheet around him properly before leaving as he had icily commanded me to.

I walked back into the living room. There was no Ellen in sight and the place was in disarray. Bottles of wine and cans of beer lay about. Some still had some liquid in them and they spilled on the floor.

"Ellen!" I was controlling my temper. Who was she expecting to clean up after her?

"What?" She appeared from an archway that led to an hallway of other rooms and spaces in the big house. And she was holding a carton of yoghurt.

I gestured at the living room. "You need to clean this mess, Ellen."

"No." She bluntly refused.

"No?" I watched her sip yoghurt in silent anger.

"You asked for a party, you should clean it up."

"I did not ask for this kind of party." I countered through gritted teeth.

"And you chased out my guests, I'm still not happy over that so no, I'm not cleaning."

"I was not the one who chased out your guests."

"But you supported his decision. That's same thing. So sort it out yourself." She shrugged and walked past me to go into her room.

"Ellen." I called again.

"She's unavailable!" She yelled from the distance and waved a bye at me.

I slumped onto a sofa and took in all the mess made. How had she had time to gather those people and they drunk so much in so little time? I grunted in frustration, got up and began to clean the place.

There goes my rest.
