Katelyn‘s POV

The café was warm and smelled faintly of roasted coffee beans and alcohol from the small bar in the corner.

I sat in a booth by the window, my coat draped over the seat beside me.

Outside, people hurried past on the sidewalk, the streetlights already flickering on though it was still early evening.

Rachel slid into the seat across from me, unwrapping a scarf from around her neck. “You sounded stressed on the phone,” she said. “What’s going on?”
