Saturday morning sunlight leaked through the curtains, soft and golden. For a second, everything felt normal. Quiet and calm.

Then I stretched my leg and blinked in surprise.

The swelling had gone down overnight. The sharp ache that I felt occasionally last night had faded to a dull throb. I sat up slowly, testing my ankle, rotating it side to side. It felt almost brand new.

Austin had eased some of the pain last night before I told him to leave.
