The moon was high, silver light washing over the trees outside the window. Inside the cabin, it was quiet with just the sound of soft, steady breathing.

Ruby lay against me, her cheek resting on my chest, one arm draped lazily across my stomach. Her skin was warm, her heartbeat slow. I hadn’t moved for over an hour, afraid to wake her. She needed sleep.
