I hadn’t slept at all. My body was exhausted, but since the day before I had been restless. My mind wouldn’t shut off after seeing Ruby like that. Scared. Shaken. Curling into me like I was the only solid thing she could hold on to.

I’d held her all night, even after she drifted off. It felt… right.

But she left before I could say anything that mattered. I wish I had stopped her from leaving.
