The smell of smoke still clung to my clothes as I stood outside the emergency room, watching the doors swing shut behind Ruby’s stretcher.

She was barely conscious when I pulled her from the bathroom. Her skin was hot to the touch, her lips dry and pale. But even in that weakened state, she had managed to whisper my name.

“Austin…”

That single word broke something in me.
