Machines beeped in steady rhythm, but Ruby hadn’t moved. Not even once.

Every minute felt like it was dragging me closer to the edge of something irreversible.

The human doctors had done their best. So had my kind. But she wasn’t getting better.

I couldn’t stand there doing nothing anymore.

I pushed the door open and walked back into the room, ignoring the startled looks from the nurses. “Doctor,” I called out.

He looked up from her chart. “Please wait outside. ...
