A knock came after only moments. “Ruby? It’s me.” Austin’s voice was low, laced with worry. “Are you alright?”

I unlocked the door and cracked it open. He slipped inside, closing it softly behind him. His eyes swept over me, concerned.

“I’m fine,” I whispered, though my stomach still twisted.

He shook his head, disbelief flickering across his face. “That thing had blood in it, Ruby. I can’t believe you actually drank it.”
