An uneasy silence lingered.

“Did John send you here?” I asked, my voice trembling.

She didn’t answer directly but lifted her chin. “I saw it myself. It's incest to be sneaking around and sleeping with your husband’s brother.”

I flinched as the words landed like poison in the air.
