My foster mother sat across from me, looking calm and satisfied. But my whole body was trembling with anger and hurt.

Finally, I lifted my head. “I don’t live with John anymore. His house burned down. Do you know where he was when it happened?”

“He wasn’t with me. He was with Lisa,” I whispered, my throat tightening, the memory of smoke clawing at me again.
