I carried the black paper bag in my right hand as I walked down the corridor toward my suite. The air in the hall was still, the quiet only broken by the faint hum of the overhead lights.

My shoes made steady sounds against the polished floor, each step bringing me closer to the door I had in mind. Inside the bag was the gift I planned to give her.
