I knew that in the first few days after I left, Alpha Gray must have been drowning in pain. I pictured him alone in the apartment, silent and unmoving.

He would stay on the balcony for long hours, drinking whiskey even though he had promised me he wouldn’t. His shoulders would be heavy, his hair messy from neglect, and the scent of his cologne fading under the weight of alcohol.
