Chapter 2

Mira stared at Dr. Marcus, his words echoing in her mind. Pregnant? She was pregnant. After three years of disappointment, it seemed impossible.

"That's... that's not possible," she stammered, her hand unconsciously moving to her flat stomach. "We've been trying for years. I can't be..."

Dr. Marcus smiled gently, his weathered face filled with genuine warmth. "I assure you, Luna, the test is accurate. You're about six weeks along."

Six weeks. Her mind raced backward, counting days. It must have been that night, the last time she and Damon had been intimate, before he'd started avoiding her completely. Before the distance between them had grown insurmountable.

A whirlwind of emotions crashed over her. This was everything she'd prayed for, But now, with Vera's betrayal fresh in her mind and her position in the pack destroyed, the timing felt cruelly ironic.

"Luna?" Elena's voice broke through her spiraling thoughts. The young servant was looking at her with excitement. "Are you okay?"

Was she okay? Mira didn't even know how to begin answering that question. Her world had been turned upside down in a matter of days, and now this revelation threatened to shake it even further.

"I... I need some time to process this," she managed to say, her voice barely above a whisper. "Dr. Marcus, please don't tell anyone about this. Not yet."

He nodded solemnly. "Of course, Luna. Doctor-patient confidentiality is sacred. But I must advise you to take care of yourself. No stress, plenty of rest, and a nutritious diet are crucial right now."

Mira almost laughed at the irony. No stress? In her current situation? She'd been stripped of her title, cast out of her home, and betrayed by the two people she'd trusted most. Stress was all she had left.

As Elena helped her leave the clinic, Mira's mind wondered. What should she do? Should she tell Damon? The pack? They'd already replaced her, already moved on as if she'd never existed. Would this change anything, or would it only make things worse?

A chilling thought struck her, making her stumble slightly. What if they tried to take her baby? The heir they'd been waiting for all this time. Would they push her aside and raise her child as Vera's? The thought made her stomach churn.

No. She wouldn't let that happen. Whatever else occurred, she would protect this child with her life.

"Elena," she said, stopping abruptly in the corridor. "I need your help. And I need you to swear you won't tell anyone what you heard in there."

Elena's eyes widened, but she nodded eagerly. "Of course, Luna. Anything you need."

Mira took a deep breath, trying to organize her chaotic thoughts. "I need time to think. Can you cover for me if anyone asks where I am? Make excuses?"

"Absolutely," Elena replied without hesitation. "Take all the time you need."

They made their way back to the servants' quarters in silence. As soon as they reached the tiny room she now called home, she collapsed onto the hard mattress.

"Luna?" Elena's voice was hesitant. "What are you going to do?"

Mira stared at the water-stained ceiling, her hand resting protectively on her stomach. "I don't know," she admitted. "I just... I need to think."

Elena perched on the edge of her own bed, wringing her hands nervously. "If you don't mind me saying, Luna... maybe you should tell them."

Mira turned to look at her, surprised by the suggestion. "Tell them? After everything they've done?"

Elena nodded slowly, her expression thoughtful. "I know it's not my place, but... they cast you aside because you couldn't provide an heir, didn't they? And now you're carrying one."

Mira sat up, considering the servant's words. She was right, of course. This did change everything. But the memory of their cruel words, it all still burned like acid in her chest.

"What if they try to take the baby?" she voiced her deepest fear aloud. "What if they still don't want me, just the heir I'm carrying?"

Elena's eyes softened with understanding. "Luna, you're stronger than you know. If you tell them, you'll be doing it on your terms. You'll have the upper hand for once."

Mira nodded slowly, mulling over the words. Elena was right. If she revealed this news strategically, she would be the one in control.

"You're right," she said finally, feeling a spark of determination kindle in her chest. "I'll tell them. But not yet. I need to plan this carefully."

Elena smiled, relief evident on her face. "That's the Luna I remember. Strong and smart."

The next morning, Mira woke feeling better than the previous day.

"How are you feeling, Luna?" Elena asked as she helped her sit up.

"Better," Mira said, managing a small smile. "And I've made a decision. I'm going to tell them, but not immediately. I need to be strategic about this."

Elena nodded approvingly. "What's your plan?"

"First, I need to confirm everything with Dr. Marcus again. Then, I'll wait a few more weeks, just to be certain the pregnancy is stable. After that..." She took a deep breath. "I'll confront Damon and the pack council."

Over the following weeks, Mira kept her head down and her secret close. She performed her menial tasks without complaint, endured the whispers and pitying stares, and bided her time. All the while, her hidden truth grew stronger inside her, giving her the strength to endure each humiliation.

Dr. Marcus confirmed her pregnancy's progress and provided her with vitamins to take in secret. He regarded her with knowing eyes but kept his word about confidentiality, treating her with the respect her former position deserved.

Finally, when she was about ten weeks along, Mira decided it was time. She asked Elena to deliver a message to Damon, requesting a pack council meeting. The look of shock on Elena's face when she returned told her everything.

"He... he agreed," Elena stammered. "The meeting is set for tomorrow morning. Luna, he looked confused, but he agreed."

That night, Mira barely slept. She rehearsed what she was going to say over and over, imagining every possible reaction. By dawn, she was exhausted but filled with a steely determination she hadn't felt in months.

As she walked into the council chamber, the room fell silent. Damon, Vera, her mother-in-law, and the other council members stared at her with a curiosity and barely concealed disdain. She could feel their judgment, but she refused to let it crush her.

"What is the meaning of this, girl?" her mother-in-law snapped, her voice dripping with venom. "You have no right to call a council meeting."

Mira straightened her spine, meeting the older woman's gaze steadily. For the first time in weeks, she felt like herself again. "I have every right, as the true Luna of this pack."

Confused murmurs filled the room. Damon leaned forward, his brow furrowed in confusion and irritation. "What are you talking about, Mira?"

She took a deep breath, feeling the weight of the moment. This was it. The revelation that would change everything, one way or another.

"I'm pregnant," she announced, her voice ringing clear through the stunned silence. "I'm carrying the heir to this pack."

The room erupted into chaos. Vera gasped audibly, her face draining of color. Mira's mother-in-law jumped to her feet. But Mira only had eyes for Damon.

He stared at her, his face cycling through shock.

As the noise in the room began to die down, Alpha Damon's voice cut through the silence. "How can you be sure this child is mine?" His words were cold. "You couldn't conceive for three years. Why should I believe it's mine now?"

The question hit Mira like a physical blow, stealing the breath from her lungs and the words from her throat.
