Chapter 8

Anise

I placed my hand on her shoulder blade and smiled.

"I'm so sorry for making you go through this"

I know how much she'd love to stay in a luxury, enjoy it while it lasts, but how do I bring myself to tell her that Daven has feelings for me?

It's what I've been running from. He always confessed it to me in the past.

At first, our parents played a blind eye to it because they believed I had an overprotective brother and hoped we would get along.

I also didn't believe him because he was more like a flirt and had the ladies hovering around him.

Some also came to me with enticing offers to hook them up with daven, but I was just a nerd who didn't fancy relationships and turned down their enticing offers.

Not until Dante did I see it as a means to avoid daven and so, when my father fixed our marriage, based on the fact that he was business partners with his father, I was glad and viewed it as a way to avoid daven.

However, Dante never stops rubbing it in my face that he only married me because it was my father's death wish.

I shook my head to escape the memories and Becky held my hands and gave me a queer smile.

"It's okay, what are friends?, but you own me for the stress, a lot" she stressed, ogling her eyes at me.

I tried to suppress my laughter, but she burst into laughter and I joined her.

"That would take years, but I'd come up with something"

I replied, and she rested her head on the headrest. She faked a smile and leaned back at the window.

I won't be needing anyone's help and I'd be the independent woman I dream of, alone.

I haven't slept since our arrival at the designated suite which was around Knightsbridge, which was a few drives away from Mayfair.

However, Becky had been captured by sleep itself, noticing I was suffering from insomnia.

Once it was dawn, I woke her up to get ready for the trip. I didn't want to spend another night here knowing daven would come after me.

It took a while to knock her out of her sleep, and finally she was awake with saliva drooling from her mouth.

"What time is it?" She asked, yawning wildly and straining her arms. Becky intended to climb the bed again, but I held her collar and pulled her up.

"There's still time" she protested, rubbing her eyes and fluttering them certainly to have a clearer vision of who she was staring at.

"We don't have all day Becky. Just put on something, you'll bath on the plane."

"Seriously?"

"Yeah!" I added, scared. She shuddered, pulled a long face and then scratched her back.

"Why are you running away, it's like harm is in the way or something?" she questioned while beckoning me to hand over the clothes I selected for her.

It was baggy pants and a T-shirt.

"Please no questions, not now!" I snapped and quickly moved to the window.

My eyes stared outside like a hawk and I hadn't gotten this tensed before.

Daven was making this up, and his face kept occupying my mind that he'd come for me. I could feel it.

"Sometimes, you just have to face it. "How long will you keep running?" she quotes in a husky voice.

I turned in her direction and saw her wearing the outfit in haste, dashed to the bathroom to wash her face and brush before coming out.

"Ready" she announced and lazily pulled her luggage towards the exit door.

"I hope you don't make us miss the flight"

I nodded, so relieved that we'd be leaving here.

We boarded the plane and when it had hit the runway, a sense of relief and peace left my mind.

Becky was beside me, covering her face with a magazine that had Daven's face as the cover page.

Staring at it made my stomach twist and the fact that I'd escaped him was a relief.

I closed my eyes, enlivened and when I opened them, I was looking out the window, staring out the window, as if everything outside seemed to be running with the plane.

It was serene. I anticipated the take-off until the pilot suddenly made an announcement.

"Ladies and gentlemen, this is your captain speaking. We've been informed of a situation on board, and I am afraid we need to take a moment."

His words were laced with a calm practice tone, but nevertheless, his announcement jolts Becky to life.

An uproar had begun inside the plane with everyone confused about why the journey was halted.

There was tension, and we all had to sit back while some flight attendants were trying so hard to keep some impatient passengers calm.

My chest grew tight as I didn't know who was asking a question. The nonchalant Becky has figured out prickles to chew because none of this bothers her.

In a flash, some security agents got inside the plane, accessing everywhere, and it dawned on me that perhaps a criminal was on board with us.

Two agents stopped at us, their eyes studied us and fear took my breath.

"We found them", the first communicates through his earpiece. I shuddered where I sat, more confused than ever.

The prickles in Becky's hand dropped and we both stared at each other and back at the agents.

We're doomed.

"Can I know the reason we've been apprehended?" Becky finally spoke after an hour of being held in the precinct.

No one was telling us anything, and we sat opposite a detective. He wasn't even attending to us as he was busy reading files before him.

I was just quiet, looking more sober than ever.

"We are innocent, we aren't criminals" she protested, growling at him.

"Then how do you explain the fact that you embezzled a trillion dollars and attempted to run away?"

The detective fired back, and I fluttered my eyes, taken aback by his words.

"What? Can you hear yourself? Where's the evidence? Huh? These are false accusations..."

Becky was bantering with the detective who threatened to lock her up if she kept countering his assumption.

However, she stopped when Daven's secretary appeared to us.

Damn it! I should have known, he wouldn't let me off easily.
