Chi Qian shot a sideways glance at Mei Li before speaking. "He's just staying at my place for now, but we're meeting Director Song tomorrow. I want to check on his health and see if Director Song can help him recover quicker."
"So, have you guys... seen each other? What! Don't give me that look! Who knows what you two have been up to the last couple of days?" Mei Li's voice was full of playful suspicion.
"I think the long journey is messing with your brain," Chi Qian retorted, skillfully dodging Mei Li's endless teasing as they pulled the car to a complete stop outside the house. The green, three-bedroom duplex was probably the only asset Chi Qian had left to her name, bought with her very first paycheck in preparation for this exact situation with her adoptive mother, Madam Xin, freezing her assets.
Chi Qian helped Mei Li with her luggage. They didn't have the luxury of giving the house a proper look because of the rain, even though this was Mei Li's first actual visit, despite knowing about the house for years. Walking through the front door, Chi Qian bumped right into Kim Jin in the lobby. He immediately pulled her into a hug.
"Wife, you're back! You need to take a hot bath before you catch a cold. This must be your friend you talked about."
Snapping out of her trance, Chi Qian took the initiative to introduce them. "Mei Li, this is Kim Jin, the one I spoke about."
"Chi Qian, did you win the husband lottery? I expected him to be handsome, but not this handsome!" While Chi Qian had expected Mei Li to say something ridiculous given her straightforward personality, it was another thing to be on the receiving end, especially right in front of Kim Jin himself. A deep flush instantly stained Chi Qian's face.
Thankfully, even though Kim Jin had lost his memory, he wasn't stupid, even if he sometimes acted a bit aloof. He spoke, effortlessly lightening the atmosphere. "I'm just lucky to have a wife like Chi Qian. I left some lunch I prepared in the microwave, so you can eat before you rest in your room for the night."
It wasn't until Kim Jin left the room that Mei Li spoke, not without giving Chi Qian a playful poke on the head, snapping her back to reality. "Are you sure you're still intact there?"
This time, Chi Qian felt completely embarrassed, a hint of red creeping up her face. "If you continue to spout nonsense I'll let you out into the rain! Change your clothes; I'll meet you in your room—which is beside the kitchen—as we have a lot to talk about." Chi Qian quickly hurried away after pointing out the room for Mei Li, afraid Mei Li might say something else embarrassing she couldn't recover from, since this wasn't exactly the first time.
Chi Qian would be lying if she said the thought hadn't popped into her head a couple of times. Having a firsthand look at Kim Jin's perfectly chiseled body every day was something she was sure countless actresses would die for a glance at. Thankfully, they were living in a three-bedroom duplex, so there was space for everyone, or else she might have given in herself.
This time, Chi Qian could only curse Mei Li for putting such thoughts in her head. She slowly turned the hot water valve, had a quick bath, dried her hair, and put on midnight blue pajamas with her hair tied into a ponytail. Heading toward the kitchen, she passed Kim Jin's room. As usual, she could see some light coming from below the door meaning Kim Jin wasn't asleep and was probably on the computer browsing the internet—something he'd become obsessed with since his memory loss.
Chi Qian grabbed two portions of food for Mei Li and herself before walking into Mei Li's room and just as expected, Mei Li was already dressed for the night, her laptop wide open. Chi Qian served the rice pudding, waiting for Mei Li to have a taste before speaking, but like usual, Mei Li quickly beat her to it. "Gosh, Chi Qian, not only did you win the handsome husband lottery, but he can also cook! As your best friend, why don't you help me find one? I'd pay!"
Chi Qian looked at Mei Li helplessly. "Mei Li, snap out of it. Let's be serious this time."
Almost ignoring Chi Qian, Mei Li took a huge spoonful of rice pudding before speaking, her mouth full. "You know, Chi Qian, you're no fun at all."
"So, how did the trip go?" Chi Qian spoke ignoring Mei Li and trying to get their conversation back on track. This time thankfully, Mei Li finally adopted a serious expression.
"Although the news about you running from your engagement to Kai Feng hasn't hit the press, a lot of people know, even in Shanghai. They won't want to be on the wrong side of the Feng family. Did you have any success at the expo?"
Needless to say, Chi Qian took a huge breath and looked in Kim Jin's room direction. Everything she needed to say to Mei Li was in that glance.
The room felt a bit heavy as reality sank in before Mei Li broke the silence trying to lighten the atmosphere. " I guess even if you didn't ask I'd say it anyway! The house looks great, but the penthouse still beats this by a long way. Although the situation doesn't look good yet, I spoke to the lawyers yesterday, and they said there's a chance you might get your stuff back from the Xin family, but the court process might take years to complete, and I'm sure you won't bet on that."
"I didn't say I wasn't going to give up yet!" Chi Qian said, sending a haunting look towards Mei. She wasn't sure how Mei Li mentioning her previous penthouse—which was seized along with her other assets by the Xin family—would serve as a good icebreaker, but it did cheer her up a bit. After being lost in her thoughts for a good while, Chi Qian pulled out a silver watch, handing it over to Mei Li before speaking.
"I took this watch from Kim Jin in the hospital a few days ago because it looked expensive, and yesterday, I went to a watch store to have it cleaned since it had a lot of dirt stains. Surprisingly, the store manager offered to buy it for two million dollars immediately on the spot."
Without doubt, this was one of the few times Chi Qian had seen Mei Li stunned, her mouth wide open. And Mei Li was definitely not holding back with her next words. "Who the f is Kim Jin? He wouldn't be mad if you sold it! Take it as your bride price, and it would solve a lot of problems on our part... I mean that, or selling your bathwater!"
