Chapter 4 The Purple Dream

Director Song, true to his reputation, needed only a glance at the medical report to know something was amiss. Chi Qian then spent the next thirty minutes relaying the entire ordeal with Kim Jin, exactly as she’d told Mei Li. It was Chi Qian’s turn to be surprised when Director Song took a deep, shaky breath before speaking.

“The poison has another name, Purple Dream,” he revealed, his voice laced with gravity. “Its name might sound deceptively gentle, but it’s deadly. I’ve only heard about it’s twice in my entire career because it was banned by governments worldwide five decades ago. The person who wants him dead isn't someone you want to cross, no matter what!”

Chi Qian merely gave a slight nod. She’d had the same chilling thought, and Director Song's words only solidified her fear. Yet, she felt utterly helpless. Kim Jin’s recovery was her only hope of navigating this perilous mess. Director Song took a moment to collect his thoughts before speaking further.

“You’re both incredibly unlucky, yet remarkably fortunate,” he made a slight pause softening his gaze “ He’s going to be okay, alright. The drug hadn't fully reacted before he vomited, and getting him to the hospital so quickly eliminated any hidden complications. I’m sure you’ve heard this before, but he should regain his memory within six months to a year.”

“ I also certainly hope so…” Chi Qian’s words was mix with a hint of worry as the door creaked open, with Kim Jin walking in, signaling their cue to leave. Almost simultaneously Chi Qian rose to her feet, thanking Director Song , then exiting the room.

Back in the car, Chi Qian sensed Kim Jin's exhaustion in his silence. She couldn't resist using the opportunity to tease him , leaning forward to playfully giving his hair a soft tug. “You know, you’re one troublesome bunny. We’re heading to the office now, but I’ve already ordered lunch for us there.”

Kim Jin simply nodded, and within minutes, he drifted off to sleep. Chi Qian felt a pang of disappointment. She had wanted to point out the city’s popular landmarks as they drove by, knowing he’d shown interest.

The journey took a surprisingly pleasant turn; they arrived at the building within an hour, a rare sense of excitement bubbled within Chi Qian a feeling she hadn't experienced in a long time and with a gentle nudge from Chi Qian, Kim Jin was now wide awake noticing the change of scenery and Chi Qian’s excited aura. He naturally looked up at the towering skyscraper before them. “Wife, do you own this building?”

“…”

All of Chi Qian’s carefully built excitement instantly deflated with that single word. They were in the bustling business district near the city center, and he actually imagined she owned a 72-story building? Even the Xin family didn’t own a quarter of it. She was already feeling a touch inferior, suspecting Kim Jin might be one of those super-rich individuals everyone was trying to kill, and his comment certainly didn't help. Seeing Kim Jin's innocent, inquisitive expression, Chi Qian quickly dispelled her gloomy thoughts. She pointed to the 52nd floor. “Husband, look carefully. Your wife rented the entire floor with her ‘little strength.’ Remember to treat her right in the future.”

Despite not understanding half of what Chi Qian meant, Kim Jin simply went along with it. Chi Qian’s mind, however, was miles away. She wondered when she had suddenly become so comfortable with Kim Jin calling her “wife.” Thinking about it now, being married to Kim Jin wasn’t so bad after all. Or at least, this broke billionaire was her husband for now! As they walked into the building and entered the elevator, Chi Qian wasn’t surprised to find Mei Li waiting for them.

“So, Kim Jin, how did the hospital visit go?” Mei Li asked.

“It went okay,” Kim Jin replied, exchanging brief pleasantries with Mei Li before her demeanor turned serious.

“Since Chi Qian is under a lot of scrutiny right now, I told everyone you’re my cousin, Kim. So, you’ll have to leave the office together.” Chi Qian didn't object; it suited her, as she needed to pick up her dress for tonight’s dinner party. Kim Jin, with little option, given his intrusion into their private affairs, simply accepted.

After spending the next seven minutes ensuring Kim Jin understood his "lines" and everything he needed to know, they walked straight to Chi Qian’s office. It was lunch hour, so the office was fairly empty, which worked out perfectly for them.

They all entered Chi Qian’s office, joined by two other staff members whom Kim Jin later learned were named Luo Ma and Sun Ba, there to assist with the planning. Kim Jin noted that while the office wasn’t grand in terms of space, Chi Qian had clearly made a conscious effort to make it feel like home, with several plant vases scattered around. The meeting quickly got into full swing, leaving Kim Jin to explore the office on his own.

Chi Qian was scheduled to pick up her dress at the designer’s office after the meeting, so they kept it as brief as possible, spending the next hour mapping out potential investors attending the event. By the time they finished, there was hardly any time left, so Chi Qian quickly sent a message to Kim Jin before leaving.

Meanwhile, Kim Jin finally let out a breath of relief, watching Chi Qian depart from the office. Though he had lost his memory, he wasn’t foolish. He knew there was a strange, dynamic relationship between him and Chi Qian and only after overhearing Mei Li and Chi Qian’s late-night conversation that confirmed his suspicion but also his belief that Chi Qian was his best bet now was only reaffirmed.

“I’m sorry, everyone, but I have work to do. I promise to make it up to you with a meal,” Kim Jin swiftly dismissed the ring of female actresses who had slowly gathered around him, eager to show him around the office. Chi Qian knew Kim Jin possessed a peculiar aura that made him attractive; she had tried to hide him in a baggy blazer, but that was instantly seen through.

With everyone gone, Kim Jin quickly gained access to the company server, checking the company's finances. Without much effort, he could tell the company was in bad shape. The only source of revenue for the past four months came from whatever Chi Qian had managed to salvage from her frozen assets. With their funds drying up and over twenty staff members, it wasn't hard to see why Chi Qian was a little desperate. Knowing there was little he could do on that front, he began searching for something that could reveal his identity. He knew exactly where to start: the investment forum. Almost immediately, he found what he was looking for, never imagining he'd find it so quickly.

Just as alarm bells began to ring in his head, spotting Mei Li heading his way, Kim Jin couldn’t move his fingers. He slumped forward, cold, onto the monitor.
